PRINCETON, N.J. - Senior quarterback
Tom Bennewitz (Weston, Conn.) and freshman wide receiver
Tim McManus (St. Paul, Minn.) were honored by the Ivy League, earning Ivy player and rookie of the week honors, respectively.
Both were outstanding in Saturday's 59-31 victory over Cornell as Dartmouth scored the most points in a football game since a 1935 victory over Bates, 59-0.
Bennewitz threw for 339 yards and four touchdowns to lead his Big Green to a televised win, the Big Green's third Ivy win of the season. The 12th-best passing total in school history came in just 21 attempts and Bennewitz ran for another score. The Big Green's average offensive scoring drive was less than 80 seconds.
McManus had an outstanding afternoon, catching six passes for 124 yards and two scores as he was recognized as the Ivy's outstanding rookie for the second time this fall. In the second quarter, he had a 75-yard catch-and-run up the right side, tying for the ninth-longest TD grab in school history. On special teams, McManus recovered Cornell's onside kick attempt in the fourth quarter.
Two other players were named to the Ivy honor roll.
Senior defensive end
Dan Cook (Chicago, Ill.) was all over the field against Cornell with nine tackles (five solo), a forced fumble that led to a field goal and a fumble recovery in the first quarter. Cook's stat line also had 2.5 tackles for loss, a third-quarter sack and a pass breakup.
Senior wide receiver
Brian Evans (Fairfield, Texas) had five catches for an eye-popping 191 yards and two scores in the Cornell game. In recording the fourth-best day in Big Green receiving history, Evans had first-half catches of 62, 60 and 49 yards.
Dartmouth, 3-5 overall and 3-2 in the Ivy League, is on the road Saturday, traveling to Brown for a 12:30 pm kickoff.
