HANOVER, N.H. - Sitting in third place in the Ivy League, Dartmouth football will look to remain in the top half of the conference as the Big Green travels to Brown for a 12:30 p.m. kickoff on Saturday, November 10.
On Saturday, the Big Green outscored Cornell, 59-31, with 410 total yards of offense, including 366 yards passing. Dartmouth scored the most points in a game since shutting out Bates, 59-0, in 1935 and the most against Cornell since 1925, when the Big Green defeated the Big Red 62-13.
"It was a very productive afternoon for us," said Dartmouth coach
Buddy Teevens. "Turnovers were absolutely critical, and they provided us with great field position as well as an emotional lift for our team."
Dartmouth was led by senior quarterback
Tom Bennewitz (Weston, Conn.) who threw for 339 yards and four touchdowns. The receivers for the Big Green had an impressive day as well. Senior
Brian Evans (Fairfield, Texas) had a career day with five receptions for 191 yards and two touchdowns, including a 62-yard scoring strike. Freshman
Tim McManus (St. Paul, Minn.) had the ninth longest pass scoring play with a nice 70-yard catch-and-run. McManus finished the day with six catches for 124 yards.
"Bennewitz had his best game. He was sharp and threw the ball well," said Teevens. "McManus continues to improve and showed it on Saturday. He has been productive all season and his ability to run after the catch has helped this team."
On defense, the Big Green gave up 542 yards, but forced seven turnovers. Senior cornerback
Jason Blydell (Nahant, Mass.) led Dartmouth with 10 total tackles, including seven solo stops, and a forced fumble. Senior linebacker
Justin Cottrell (Somers Point, N.J.) added eight tackles and an interception return of 32 yards. "We generated a pass rush that was effective and forced the quarterback to get rid of the ball quickly," said Teevens. "We had a bend and not break mindset."
Brown is up next and for the Bears, quarterback Michael Daugherty and his receivers continue to rack up the yards. Daugherty has thrown for 2,382 yards this season with 17 touchdowns. Wide receiver Buddy Farnham has been his favorite target with 61 receptions and a team-leading seven touchdowns. Teammate Paul Raymond is the Bears' deep threat, averaging 100 yards per game and 17 yards per reception.
"They have a good quarterback and a great core of receivers," said Teevens. "They spread it around nicely and have two great pass catchers. It will be a tremendous challenge for us defensively."
The running game for Brown has struggled this season as the Bears are ranked seventh in the Ivy League. Brown is averaging 106 yards on the ground with Chris Strickland leading the way at 30 yards a game.
Defensively, the Bears are last in the league in total defense, giving up 460 yards a game. Linebacker Jonathan May is the leader in the middle with 68 total tackles, including a league-leading 47 solo stops. In the secondary, Darrell Harrison has three interceptions and six passes defensed. "The defense is strong and physical, like all Brown teams in the past," said Teevens.
The game will be aired regionally on WFRD (99 Rock), the "Official Voice of Dartmouth Sports," with play-by-play announcer Bob Lipman and former football captain Wayne Young '72 providing the commentary.
