Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Dartmouth women's basketball team (1-6) shook things up tonight at University Arena, but it was not enough as Stony Brook (4-6) came away with a 65-48 win.
Betsy Williams (Norwich, Vt.) led Dartmouth with a career-high 13 points while Koren Schram (Batesville, Ark.) added 11 points including three triples.
Dartmouth came into the game after a 10-day layoff for exams while Stony Brook was looking to snap a two-game losing streak. Both effects showed early as the Big Green committed 20 first half turnovers and trailed 29-16 at halftime.
The Big Green looked good early, striking first with two free throws from Brittney Smith (Fort Worth, Texas) and keeping the Seawolves off the scoreboard until 16:32 when Aly Young hit a jumper to tie it. Dartmouth's defense kept it in the game and back-to-back threes from Schram put the Green on top 14-10 at 8:29.
Dartmouth would have little to be happy about for the balance of the half, as Misha Horsey got the hot hand to spark Stony Brook to a 19-2 run to close the half, starting the rally with a triple and scoring eight points in the final eight minutes.
Head Coach Chris Wielgus sent a message in the second half with a starting lineup comprised of five reserve players. Stony Brook took advantage of early miscues and its lead ballooned to 45-24 at 12:03.
Dartmouth buckled down and Williams got going, scoring 11 straight points while she and her teammates held the Seawolves without a bucket for nearly four minutes to cut it to 47-35 at 8:16 after a pair of free-throws by Kristen Craft (Marshalltown, Iowa), her first points of the game.
The Big Green had the game within reach coming out of a timeout, but the Seawolves rattled off an 8-1 run to go up 55-36 at 5:10.
Dartmouth would not back down, however, and jarring defense led to productive offense when Schram scored five-straight to cut it to 59-45 at 2:48. The Big Green kept looking for threes late but made just one, when Meghan McFee (Manchester, Conn.) hit her first collegiate bucket and Dartmouth's last of the game.
Stony Brook got a few late buckets and Dartmouth could not mount a late run, falling 65-48.
Four Stony Brook players scored in double figures led by Aly Young's 20-point effort off the bench and a 12-point, 12-rebound performance from Dana Ferraro. Dartmouth's Schram added five rebounds to her 11 points while Brittney Smith had eight points and seven rebounds.
The Seawolves controlled the glass, outrebounding Dartmouth 44-34.
The Big Green is back in action on Wednesday, Dec. 19 when it heads west to face the University of Denver.
