Princeton, N.J. ? Princeton outscored Dartmouth 10-5 in the last two minutes of the contest to take a 61-56 victory tonight at Jadwin Gym. Junior Sydney Scott (Houston, Texas) put forth an heroic effort with 17 points and 16 rebounds to lead the Big Green in the hotly contested battle.
The Big Green's Ivy Title hopes took a hit as it dropped to 13-11 overall, 7-3 Ivy. Princeton is now 11-13, 5-5 Ivy.
Junior Kristen Craft (Marshalltown, Iowa) joined Scott in double figures with 12 points while Meagan Cowher led Princeton with 19 points, 10 rebounds. Dartmouth's Ashley Taylor (Cookeville, Tenn.) was below her season average with just nine points, but broke the school's 19-year-old single-season free-throws record with 140 on the year. She surpassed Liz Walter's mark of 139 set in 1987-88.
Dartmouth got off to a slow start in the first half and the Tigers took an early 13-5 lead at 14:06 after a triple by Jessica Berry. Big Green senior Taylor answered with six straight points to help pull her team back in it, and a triple by rookie Michelle Meyer (Covington, Ohio) made it 19-16, Princeton at 8:26.
The Big Green took its first lead of the game, up 22-21 after a Scott layup. Dartmouth held the Tigers scoreless for a four minute period to gain that advantage, but was outscored 5-0 in the closing minutes to give Princeton a 26-22 halftime lead.
Dartmouth shot a woeful 27.6 percent for the half, but forced nine Princeton turnovers leading to eight Big Green points.
Both teams traded buckets early in the second half before Dartmouth sophomore Koren Schram (Batesville, Ark.) knotted it up at 30-30 at 17:23. The Tigers rallied to go on a 13-6 run during the next five minutes to take their largest lead, up 43-36 at 12:09.
Craft hit a big three to start a 6-0 Dartmouth counterattack to pull the Big Green within one, down 45-44 at 8:01. Dartmouth took its first lead of the half at 4:53, up 49-47 after a pair of free-throws by Scott. Princeton fought back, but Craft tied it, 51-51, with a huge jumper from the corner at 2:33.
Princeton got the job done late in the game to earn the 61-56 win. Dartmouth shot just 30.5 percent for the game while Princeton hit 42.6 percent of its shots and owned a 44-41 rebounding advantage.
The Big Green is back in action tomorrow night when it heads to Penn for a 7:00 p.m. tip in a critical Ivy contest.
