HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth men's hockey team used a two-goal third period to defeat Colgate, 3-1 on Saturday in Thompson Arena. The win gives the Big Green a first-round bye in the ECACHL playoffs and the No. 3 seed.
Nick Johnson (Calgary, Alta.) gave Dartmouth (16-10-3, 12-7-3 ECACHL) a 1-0 lead midway through the first period on the power play. T.J. Galiardi (Calgary, Alta.) brought the puck down and around behind the net giving it to Ben Lovejoy (Orford, N.H.) on the right side circle. Lovejoy shot across the ice to Johnson on the left side blasting a hard shot over Colgate netminder Mark Dekanich's left shoulder for the score.
The Raiders (13-19-4, 7-12-3) got one back on their own extra-man tally as two Big Green players were in the sin bin, giving Colgate a 5-on-3. David McIntrye, David Sloane and Nick St. Pierre connected to tie the score, 1-1 at 16:47.
The Raiders looked like they pulled ahead on another Dartmouth penalty midway through the second period. Big Green goalie Mike Devine (Orchard Park, N.Y.) made the glove save and then with his hand outstretched he fell backward into the net preventing the puck from going over the line.
Galiardi collected his second point of the night as Dartmouth pulled ahead with less than three minutes to go in the game. Peter Boldt (Greenwich, Conn.) brought the puck across center ice, shooting to Kevin Swallow (Stanwood, Mich.) as Swallow and Galiardi went one-on-one with Dekanich.
Johnson gave Dartmouth its final goal on an empty netter at 19:43 as David Jones (North Vancouver, B.C.) assisted.
Devine finished with 20 saves while Dekanich had 33. The two teams were almost even on special teams as Dartmouth was 1-for-6 on the power play and Colgate was 1-for-7.
The Big Green is now off for a week before hosting the ECACHL Quarterfinals on March 9-10 in a best-of-three series against the winner of the Princeton-Brown first round games.
