HANOVER, N.H. - Junior
J.T. Wyman (Wayzata, Minn.) scored two goals and added an assist, leading the Dartmouth men's hockey team to a 6-2 victory over Princeton Friday night.
In the opening game of the Eastern College Athletic Conference Hockey League (ECACHL) quarterfinals, the Big Green (17-10-3) took a 1-0 lead in the scheduled best of three series. Wyman opened the scoring with a power play goal at 11:54. The junior gathered his own rebound on the right circle, sneaking the puck in off the post as Dartmouth held a 1-0 lead after one period.
Just 35 seconds into the second period, freshman
T.J. Galiardi (Calgary, Alta.) scored, beating Princeton netminder Zane Kalemba through the pads from the right hash on a
Kevin Swallow (Stanwood, Mich.) feed. That goal set off a string of four straight Dartmouth markers. Wyman notched his second, chiping the puck off the boards, tucking it under Kalemba's right arm.
David Jones (No. Vancouver, B.C.) made it 4-0 after he picked up the puck in the high slot, skating to the right side to beat Kalemba at 7:29 in the second. Princeton called a timeout immediately after the goal but senior
Ben Lovejoy (Orford, N.H.) would put the final Big Green tally of the period across just a few minutes later. Lovejoy blasted the puck from the center point for Dartmouth's second power play strike of the night. That goal knocked Kalemba out of the net.
Princeton scored back-to-back goals by Jody Pederson and Darroll Powe to make it 5-2 at the end of two periods. Pederson beat Big Green goalie
Mike Devine (Orchard Park, N.Y.) low and inside the left post before Powe added another one, tipping a Daryl Marcoux power play drive through Devine's legs at 18:57.
With 4:27 left in regulation, sophomore
Rob Pritchard (Burnaby, B.C.) added an empty net goal for Dartmouth.
In the nets, Devine made 24 saves for the Big Green and earned an assist on the Pritchard goal. For Princeton (15-15-3), Kalemba made 13 saves while giving up five Dartmouth scores. Thomas Sychterz came on in relief stopping eight shots.
Galiardi had a two-point night, adding an assist on Wyman's second goal, while sophomore
Connor Shields (Edmonton, Alta.) and Swallow both had a pair of assists.
Game Two between the Big Green and the Tigers is at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday while the third game, if necessary, is scheduled for Sunday at 7 p.m.
