PROVIDENCE, R.I.– The Dartmouth softball team swept Brown for the second day in the row, taking the first game, 3-2 and the second, 10-3. With the sweep the Big Green moves into second place in the Northern Division of the Ivy League.
In the opening game Dartmouth (10-21, 6-6) took a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Leigha Clarkson started things off with a one-out single up the middle followed by a single into right field by Katie Chifcian. Sarah Bankoff had another Big Green hit and then advanced on an outfield error. Clarkson and Chifcian both came around to score.
Dartmouth tacked on another run in the top of the sixth inning when Ashley Gleason singled to center field and advanced to second before moving to third on a passed ball. Alyssa Parker hit back to the circle but the throw to home was too late as Gleason scored to make it 3-0.
Brown (7-23, 1-11) made things interesting with two runs in the top of the seventh off a two-out bases loaded single by Andrea Brown but Dartmouth held on for the 3-2 victory.
Gleason, Clarkson, Chifcian and Bankoff had all the hits for the Big Green. Stephanie Trudeau got the win while Angela Megaw picked up her first save of the season. Jessica Iwasaki took the loss for Brown.
In the nightcap Dartmouth again jumped out early with three runs. Nikki Yee reached first base with a single up the middle before Gleason and Alyssa Parker walked to load the bases. A Brown error plated three as the Big Green went up 3-0 after one.
The next inning had Dartmouth adding another run as Kirsten Costello gave the Big Green a 4-0 lead.
The Bears broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the second but Costello added another run in the top of the fourth. Fry reached on an error and advanced to second a Brown fielding error with Yee coming home to give
Brown threatened in the bottom of the fifth with runners at second and third but Dartmouth pitcher Angela Megaw struck out the last batter to end the threat and preserve the seven-run lead. The Big Green tacked on two more when Chifcian tripled in the top of the sixth giving Dartmouth a 10-1 lead. The Bears scored twice in the bottom of the frame but the Big Green held on for the 10-3 win.
Yee led all batters, going 4-for-5 on the day with two runs scored. Megaw got the win and is now 3-8 on the year. Michele Moses took the loss for Brown.
Dartmouth will host Yale next week in four games with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1:00 and then Sunday at noon.
