BOSTON, Mass. ? The Dartmouth softball team (15-21) used a bases loaded home run by
Katie Chifcian (Fullerton, Calif.) to lift the Big Green to a 9-6 victory over Boston College (10-22). The second game was canceled due to inclement weather.
The Eagles took an early lead in the opening frame when Renee Ramos blasted a double to the fence, plating two. Dartmouth tied the game in the fourth after
Kelly Fry (Marietta, Ga.) led the inning off with a hit up the middle and was moved to second on a fielders choice by
Alyssa Parker (Spring Valley, Calif.). A walk was then issued to
Leigha Clarkson (Perris, Calif.) setting up a bases loaded situation for Chifican. A hard hit ball by the sophomore was misplayed at short putting Chifcian on second, scoring Fry and Parker.
BC took the lead again when a passed ball allowed the runner at third to score, giving the Eagles a 3-2 lead setting up Chifcian's first career grand slam home run in the top of the fifth to give the Big Green the lead back at 6-3.
Ashley Gleason (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Fry started things off with back-to-back singles before Clarkson was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Chifcian's bases clearing blast over the right center fence. The four runs knocked BC starter Taylor Peyton out of the circle.
A home run by The Eagle's Britney Thompson in the bottom of the frame got one back for the home team. But another Dartmouth homer in the top of the sixth gave the Big Green three more when Parker blasted the ball over left field.
With the rain coming down in the bottom of the seventh BC made things interesting plating one on a single with another run coming home on a fielding error to make the score, 9-6. Big Green pitcher
Stephanie Trudeau (Spokane, Wash.) struck out the final batter to preserve the win.
Fry went 2-for-3 with three runs while
Christy Autin (Harwood Height, Ill.) and Gleason were 2-for-4. Chifcian lead all players with six RBIs. Trudeau earned her eighth win of the season. She went the complete game with just two earned runs while striking out six.
