BREWSTER, Mass. ? The Dartmouth men's golf team finished in a tie for fourth place out of the 44 schools competing at the New England Intercollegiate Golf Association (NEIGA) Championship, held at The Captains Golf Course in Brewster. The Big Green shot a two-round total of 617 (+41), led by freshman Pete Williamson (Hanover, N.H.) who tied for eighth with his 76-74?150 (+6).
Bryant University took home the team title with a 604 (+28), while Sacred Heart's Matt Belizze won a playoff against Alex Daley of Bryant and Anthony Gallardo of UMass-Lowell to earn medalist honors, scoring a 147 (+3) for the tournament.
Playing conditions were not conducive to low scores during the first round Monday, but Dartmouth pulled through with a 311 (+23) to find itself in a tie for second place with Husson University. Williamson's four-over 76 in the first round was good enough to put him in a tie for fourth, while sophomore Davis Mullany (Great Barrington, Mass.) was six-over par with a 78, tying him for 20th.
Only two players were able to shoot par in the opening round ? Sacred Heart's Pat Fillian and Brown's Michael Amato.
Although Dartmouth improved its score in round two with a 306 (+18), so did most of the other schools as the Big Green fell back to fourth. Mullany matched Williamson's 74 on Tuesday to complete the tournament at eight-over par (158), tying for 15th. Senior Rob Henley (Longmeadow, Mass.) placed in a tie for 25th with a 79-76?155 (+11). Rounding out the Big Green field were freshman Teddy Overton (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) with a 78-82?160 (+16) and freshman Braden Long ? playing in his first tournament ? with an 81-85?166 (+22).
