HANOVER, N.H. - With his second point of the night, sophomore Adam Estoclet (Oron, Minn.) beat St. Lawrence netminder Alex Petizian for the game winning goal 3:54 into the overtime frame. The victory is Dartmouth's third in the row as the Big Green defeated No. 19 SLU, 4-3 on Friday in an ECAC Hockey matchup.
Both sides had quality chances in the first period as goalies Petizian and Jody O'Neill (Nepean, Ont.) were up to the task.
The first penalty of the game was against Dartmouth as St. Lawrence earned a power play opportunity at 9:12 but it was the Big Green's Connor Shields (Edmonton, Alta.) that almost had his team on the board with a short handed chance that was saved up and over the cross bar. Dartmouth killed all three of the SLU's power play chances in the period.
The Big Green capitalized on its own power play opportunity at 6:50 with a 5-on-3 chance. With one Saint player out of the box, Joe Stejskal (Grand Rapids, Minn.) buried a strike to give his team a 1-0 lead. Fellow blueliner Evan Stephens (Bessmer, Mich.) took a shot that was rebounded directly to Stejskal who was waiting at the right post to just push it past Petizian. Estoclet also assisted.
A great team effort by Dartmouth late in the stanza kept SLU off the board as the Saints pounded the puck in time and time again on an expiring power play but defensive efforts by O'Neill and the Big Green prevented the tying goal.
Dartmouth's Stephens gave his team a two-goal lead midway through the second period. With the Big Green on a 4-on-3, Scott Fleming (Plainfield, Ont.) passed to a Stephens on the point as the sophomore blasted one home for his second goal of the season.
The Saints had an odd-man rush as SLU almost broke up O'Neill's shutout bid but the rookie made several athletic saves to prevent the score.
But with 2:58 showing St. Lawrence finally got on the board with its first power play strike. Zach Miskovic swept the puck toward the net as Brock McBride was there to put it in.
Matt Generous tied the game at 2-2 with :48 remaining in the frame when he shot the puck towards the net and it was blocked off a Dartmouth player and past O'Neill.
With 6:05 left in the game Shields gave his team the lead back. Stephens and linemate Connor Goggin (GlenEllyn, Ill.) passed back and forth on the point as Stephens took a shot that Shields was able to get his stick on, tipping it past Petizian who was out of position.
The lead would not hold as the Saints tied the game again with 1:22 left in the contest. Aaron Bogosian was able to catch O'Neil unaware, sliding the puck past the freshman goalie.
The gamewinner by Estoclet gave the sophomore two points on the night as he leads the Big Green in scoring with nine points this season. O'Neill had his second 40-plus save performance of the season with 42 stops. Petizian made 26 for the Saints.
The win improves Dartmouth to 3-2 overall, 3-1 in the ECAC while St. Lawrence falls to 4-3-1, 1-1-1 in the league. The Big Green will be back in action tomorrow in a 7:00 pm matchup with the Clarkson Golden Knights.
