game-winner with 55 seconds remaining, as Dartmouth
erased a two-goal deficit in the third period to defeat Cornell, 5-4, on Friday
night.
For Dartmouth (6-1-1, 5-1-1
ECAC Hockey), Newnam tallied her two goals, with one coming on the power play,
while juniors Sarah Parsons (Dover,
Mass.) and Jenna Cunningham
(Medicine Hat, Atla.) also connected on goals. Senior Maggie Kennedy (West Hartford, Conn.)
also got in on the scoring with a shorthanded goal. Senior goaltender Carli
Clemis (Taber, Alta.) earned her fifth win of the season with 24 saves,
including 13 in the second period.
For Cornell (4-3-1, 2-2-1 ECAC Hockey), Chelsea Karpenko led
the way with two scores, while Rebecca Johnston posted a goal and two assists. Kayla
Strong was in net for the Big Red and she made 25 stops with 10 of them coming
in the final frame.
It didn't take long for the Big Red to get on the board
first as Johnston
tallied her seventh of the season three minutes into the game. Sam Wauer fired
a shot on net that Clemis couldn't handle and Johnston was right on the doorstep and hit
the open net for the early 1-0 lead.
Dartmouth
evened the score on the power play with 8:11 remaining in the first period with
Newnam scoring her second of the season. The puck was worked around the
offensive zone and it came to Newnam at the top of the point. She connected on
a slap shot and it went through traffic and past Strong for the score.
In the second period, Cornell took a commanding 4-2 lead
with three second period scores. Karpenko got the lead back for the Big Red,
just 3:30 into the second frame. Cornell cycled the puck down low and Johnston ended up with
the puck at the far post and she slid the puck over to Karpenko who didn't miss
the open net.
Cunningham got the Big Green back into the game with her
fourth of the season coming 10 minutes after Cornell took the lead. Sophomore
Amanda Trunzo (Andover, Minn.)
took a shot from the left circle that was blocked and freshman Kelly Foley (Boston, Mass.)
collected the puck and went behind the net. She then found an open Cunningham
and she beat Strong to tie the game at 2-2.
Cornell answered right back to gain the lead at 3-2. With just
over five minutes to play, Stephanie Holmes scored her third of the season with
assists going to Liz Zorn and Hayley Hues.
Karpenko struck again for the Big Red with 3:33 left in the
period to increase the lead to 4-2. Johnston
fired a shot from the point that was redirected off of Karpenko's skate and
past Clemis for the score.
Dartmouth
took control midway through the final period and it all started with a
shorthanded goal from Kennedy. Sophomore Alyssa Boehm (Watertown, Conn.)
chipped the puck up the boards in the defensive end and it found Kennedy
streaking at the red line and she went in all alone on Strong. She went to the
center of the circle and beat Strong to the glove side.
Parons tallied her first of the night two minutes later to
tie the score at 4-4. She snuck it inside the right post with the assist going
to Kennedy.
After Dartmouth
had hit the post a couple of times down the stretch, the pressure paid off as
Newnam tallied her second of the night and third of the season. Trunzo skated
out of traffic and found an open Newnam at the point. She connected on a slap
shot that snuck over the right pad of Strong to win it for the Big Green.
Dartmouth will be back in
action tomorrow afternoon as Colgate comes to Hanover for a 4 p.m. start at Thompson
Arena.
