HANOVER, N.H.
? In an early season showdown, the fifth-ranked Dartmouth women's hockey team used two goals
in the first and third periods to shut out the fourth-ranked Eagles of Boston
College, 4-0, on Wednesday evening at Thompson Arena.
Sophomore Amanda Trunzo (Andover,
Minn.) and senior Maggie Kennedy (West Hartford, Conn.)
led the offensive attack with a goal and two assists apiece, while senior goaltender
Carli Clemis (Taber, Alta.) earned her second-consecutive shutout with 29
saves. Junior Jenna Cunningham (Medicine
Hat, Alta.) also chipped in with a goal and an assist.
Dartmouth (3-0-0) jumped out
to an early lead in the first as senior Julia Bronson (Arlington, Va.)
netted her first of the season to give the Big Green a 1-0 lead. Trunzo won the
face-off in the offensive end, pushed the puck back to Bronson, who skated to
the middle of the circles and fired a slap shot that tucked underneath the left
arm of Boston College's goaltender Kiera Kingston.
The Big Green increased their lead to 2-0 with a power play
goal four minutes later with Trunzo adding her third goal of the season and
third in the last two games. She camped out in front of the net as the puck
went from Kennedy down to Cunningham and she sent a pass across the crease to
an open Trunzo and she buried it for the score.
After a scoreless second period, Dartmouth extended its lead to 3-0 on Cunningham's
second goal of the season. The Big Green broke into the offensive end with
crisp passing and Kennedy found a streaking Cunningham. She faked the forehand,
went to her backhand and slid the puck into the net to give Dartmouth a commanding lead.
Kennedy closed out the scoring late in the third period with
her second of the year. Boston College had trouble getting the puck out of its own
zone and Kennedy stepped in front of a clearing pass; beat the defenders and Kingston to put Dartmouth
on top for good.
Boston College (5-1-2) and Dartmouth had plenty of opportunities on the
man advantage as both teams combined for 13 chances on the power play. The Big
Green was the only team to capitalize with Trunzo's power play goal. Dartmouth outshot Boston College
39-29 as well.
The Big Green will be back in action this coming Friday
night as Dartmouth hosts ECAC Hockey rival Union at 7 p.m. at Thompson Arena.
