PHILADELPHIA ? The Dartmouth women's basketball team (1-5) took a tough loss at the hands of the Temple Owls (4-2) tonight in its last game before final exams.
A dozen first half turnovers put the Big Green in an 18-point hole after 20 minutes of play and it never recovered en route to a 65-29 loss. Dartmouth turned the ball over 21 times and shot just 20.8 percent from the field while Temple connected on 43.1 percent of its attempts.
Senior guard Koren Schram (Batesville, Ark.) led Dartmouth with 15 points while sophomore forward Brittney Smith (Fort Worth, Texas) was just shy of a double-double with nine points, 10 rebounds.
Despite some early miscues, Dartmouth held Temple in check defensively and kept it a possession game in the opening minutes. With the score knotted at 4-4, Schram provided six straight points with a three-ball and a conventional three-point play to put the Green up 10-4 at 13:59. The confidence boost got Dartmouth running, but the uptempo pace coupled with a full court press played into Temple's hands offensively. Kristen Wallace cut into the Big Green's lead with a layup at 13:19, starting a staggering 23-0 Temple run to give the Owls a 27-10 lead at 5:31.
Brittney Smith finally stopped the bleeding for Dartmouth with a nice move inside at 5:10 and added a three-point play minutes later. Though the Big Green was back on track offensively, the Owls continued to score at the other end to keep pace with their lead, up 32-15 after a BJ Williams three at 2:45. Schram hit her second trey of the game at 2:31 but that was Dartmouth's last field goal of the half and Temple scored twice more to take a 36-18 lead at the break.
Temple picked up where it left off in the second half, opening on an 8-0 run until Cassie Cooper (Chelesa, Maine) connected on a free-throw to make it 44-19 at 14:12. Schram provided Dartmouth's first field goal of the half with a three at 13:47. She scored Dartmouth's next three points while the Owls slowed down a bit and it was 47-25 at 10:55.
Brittney Smith connected on a jumper at 9:39 to make it 51-27 and that would be the Big Green's last field goal of the game until the final minute. Temple closed on a 14-2 run to take it to the 65-29 final.
Temple's Shaqwedia Wallace led all scorers with 18 points while Shenita Landry was a force inside with 14 points, eight boards.
Dartmouth has a 10 day layoff for final exams before it hosts Stony Brook on Saturday, Dec. 13 at 2:00 p.m.
