Hanover, N.H. - Senior Darcy Rose (Fort Collins, Colo.) led a trio of double-digit scorers as the Dartmouth women's basketball team defeated Stony Brook, 59-47 this afternoon.
The Big Green shook off the rust from its 10-day final exam break, winning its first post-finals contest since 2004. Rose recorded a double-double on a career-high 18 points and 13 rebounds along with three steals and two assists. She was joined in double-figures by Brittney Smith (Fort Worth, Texas) with 14 points, five rebounds and two blocks and Betsy Williams (Norwich, Vt.) with 11 points.
Dartmouth (2-5) shot 42.9 percent from the floor while Stony Brook (1-8), coming into the game off a win over Yale, hit just 30.5 percent of its shots. The Big Green also capitalized on its 26 free-throw attempts, converting 22 for scores. A big second half in which Dartmouth held a 33-21 scoring advantage proved the difference maker for the Big Green.
Koren Schram (Batesville, Ark.) opened the game with a transition three off a steal by Williams to start a 12-4 Dartmouth run in the first five minutes. Margaret Smith (Fort Worth, Texas) had a pair of jumpers during that stretch to get her team off to a solid start. Stony Brook's Karisten Nunn cut the lead with a jumper at 12:46 to make it 12-6, Big Green. The teams traded buckets and Stony Brook kept pace with Dartmouth, pulling within one, down 16-15 at 8:03.
Though Dartmouth increased its lead to 20-17 minutes later, Stony Brook came charging back to take a 21-20 lead off a pair of free throws by Misha Horsey at 3:43. The teams were neck and neck in the closing minutes of the first half, and Brittney Smith scored the last bucket of the half to tie it at 26-26.
It was all Dartmouth in the early goings of the second half, opening on an 8-0 run spurred by five points from Williams to take a 34-26 lead at 17:31. The Seawolves struggled to find their offense, mustering just four points in the first nine minute of the half, allowing the Big Green to gain a 41-30 lead.
Stony Brook made a charge midway through the second, going on a 6-0 run to cut the lead to 41-36, Dartmouth, but the Big Green never let the Seawolves closer than five points. The Green inflated its lead to nine points after Meghan McFee (Manchester, Conn.) snagged a defensive board and pushed it ahead to Williams for a fast break layup and a 47-38 lead.
The Big Green held tight down the stretch, keeping the Seawolves at bay. Stony Brook pulled within five again, down 52-47, with 2:31 left, but Rose converted yet another three-point play to increase Dartmouth's lead for good.
Margaret Smith finished with seven points, eight boards, while Schram added nine points, four assists and three steals.
Nunn paced Stony Brook with 17 points off the bench including 7-of-8 from the free-throw line.
Dartmouth is back in action this Tuesday night when it heads south to Dallas to square-off against Southern Methodist at 8:00 p.m. EST. The game will be a homecoming for Fort Worth natives Brittney and Margaret Smith as well as assistant coach Mary Gleason, who played for the Mustangs.
