Women's Hockey Scores Two Third Period Goals to Earn Tie with Princeton

PRINCETON, N.J. - Down by two goals going into the third period, the Darmouth women's hockey team fought back with two unanswered tallies to earn the 2-2 tie with Princeton on Saturday afternoon at Hobey Baker Rink.

WIth the tie, the Big Green holds onto a two-point lead over the Tigers for home ice in the upcoming first round of the ECAC Hockey tournament. Dartmouth, however, fell one point behind Clarkson for the third spot after the Golden Knight defeated Yale, 5-1, at home.

The Tigers (12-9-6, 10-7-3 ECAC Hockey) came out ready to skate and dominated the Big Green in the opening period. Princeton peppered junior netminder Carli Clemis (Taber, Alta.) with four consecutive shots and earned its first power play opportunity just two minutes into the contest. Clemis was able to pushed aside 11 shots in the first frame. The Tigers got three power play chances in the period, to Dartmouth's two.

On its final chance of the first stanza, Princeton took the 1-0 lead with 41 seconds remaining. Melanie Wallace put the Tigers on the board with her third of the season and second on the man advantage. Princeton outshot the Big Green 12-3 in the period.

Dartmouth (14-7-6, 11-5-4 ECAC Hockey) turned the tide on Princeton in the beginning of the second period, equaling its total shot output of three in the first period, in the first few minutes of play. Because of that pressure Dartmouth got its third chance with the extra skater at the 16:37 mark, but the Big Green could only put one shot on Kristen Young on the advantage.

With 8:35 remaining in the second period, Princeton earned a 5-on-3 advantage and it only took the Tigers nine seconds to net their second power play goal of the game to increase the lead to 2-0. Annie Greenwood netted her team leading 12th goal of the season and seventh with the extra skater.

Just like Princeton did in the first period, Dartmouth dominated the play, outshooting the Tigers 11-4 in the stanza, but the Big Green could not capitalize on its pressure. Young continued to play well and made all 11 saves between the pipes.

In the third period, Dartmouth started off with a power play 2:07 into the period. Junior Maggie Kennedy (West Hartford, Conn.) took advantage of the opporunity with her 13th of the season and fifth power play score. With the goal, the Big Green has potted a power play goal in six-straight games. Juniors Shannon Bowman (Leamington, Ont.) and Sarah Newnam (Clifton, Va.) were credited with the assists. Bowman has now racked up 14 assists on the year, while Newnam continues her assist tear with her sixth helper in the last five games.

Dartmouth pulled the goalie with 1:21 remaining and paid off for the Big Green. After the initial scrum infront produce no shots, sophomore Sarah Parsons (Dover, Mass.) found the back of the net with 42 seconds left, off of a Julia Bronson shot that was blocked above the crease to knot the score at 2-2. For Parsons, she hit double-digits in goals with her 10th of the season.

In the extra session, Dartmouth had a couple of opportunities and got two shots on net. Princeton had a golden chance in the final 1:29 as the Tigers earned their sixth power play of the game. Princeton got three shots on Clemis, but she was up for the task and made all three stops. Clemis finished with 23 saves, while Young pushed aside 22 shots.

Princeton edged out the Big Green in shots with a 25-24 advantage. The Tigers also won the special teams battle with two power play goals to Dartmouth's one.

The Big Green settled for its seventh tie of the season which is a new program record and Dartmouth played in its eighth overtime game of the year.

Dartmouth will close out the regular-season next weekend as the Big Green heads to Cornell for a 7 p.m. face-off on Friday night, followed by a Saturday matinee with Colgate at 4 p.m.
