HANOVER, N.H. - The Dartmouth men's hockey team dropped a tough ECAC Hockey game to Princeton on Saturday at Thompson Arena. The Tigers rebounded from a loss last night to defeat the Big Green, 5-2. With the win Princeton wraps up the Ivy League title, its first since 1999.
Nick Johnson (Calgary, Alta.) had was looked like the first goal of the night midway through the opening frame but the puck was ruled to never having crossed the line. It was Princeton however four minutes that did jump onto the scoreboard. Matt Arhontas took a shot on netminder Mike Devine (Orchard Park, N.Y.) that was saved by the goalie as he fell back into the net. Despite the leaping save, Arhontas was able to gather the rebound to shove it past Devine.
Dartmouth's Matt Reber (Edina, Minn.) tied the score at 12:07. Rob Pritchard (Burnaby, B.C.) brought the puck down, passing up to a streaking Reber. The freshman deked goalie Zane Kalemba to the left side, shooting to the right for his third goal of the season.
Princeton pulled ahead when Brandan Kushniruk took a shot that was blocked. The puck went flying out to Mike Moore who also took a shot that was saved as the rebounded bounced out to Kevin Kaiser for the putback.
The Tigers made it 3-1 in the second when Mike Kramer potted a power play strike from the point and then Landis Stankievech made it 4-1 on a shorthanded tally at 11:10 in the final period of play.
Joe Gaudet (Etna, N.H.) got his team back into the game at 7:46 of the third. Linemates Andrew Owsiak (Moose Jaw, Sask.) and Josh Gillam (Peterborough, Ont.) brought the puck down giving it to Gaudet on the left post. Gaudet moved in on Kalemba and as he was falling to the ice he swept the puck around the outstretched goalie's legs.
Princeton put the exclamation point on the night at 17:44 when Arhontas teamed up with Taylor Fedun and Mark Magnowski for his second of the night.
The Tigers outshot the Big Green for the second time this season, getting 39 to Dartmouth's 26. Devine (8-12-2) made 34 saves while Kalemba (13-7-0) finished with 24.
The Big Green (9-12-4, 4-11-3) will continue at home next weekend hosting Brown and Yale. The weekend will be senior weekend as Dartmouth will be honoring J.T. Wyman (Wayzata, Minn.), Jon Grecu (Calgary, Alta.), Will Boardman (Brattleboro, Vt.), Johnson and Devine.
