HANOVER, NH ? Despite outshooting Brown, 42-to-24, the Dartmouth men's hockey team dropped a close, 5-4 decision on Friday in Thompson Arena. The victory gives Brown its first win in Hanover since February 11, 2000, and also marks its first season sweep of the Big Green since 1997-1998.
The Bears dominated the opening minutes of the game, but it was Dartmouth that potted the first goal, as Joe Gaudet (Etna, N.H.) redirected the puck past netminder Dan Rosen off a pass from Josh Gillam (Peterborough, Ont.) at 13:20.
Brown, however answered with two goals in the next 1:18 to grab a 2-1 lead going into the first break. Sophomore Jordan Pietrus scored just 30 seconds after Gaudet's goal to get Brown on the board. Less than a minute later, at 14:38, senior Jeff Prough connected on the power play.
Dartmouth tied the game at 9:33 of the second, scoring just as a full two-minute five-on-three was expiring. As the two players were returning to the ice, Evan Stephens (Bessemer, Mich.) ripped a shot from the top of the right face-off circle beating Rosen glove-side. Seniors Nick Johnson (Calgary, Alta.) and Jon Grecu (Calgary, Alta.) picked up the assists.
The Big Green took a five-minute penalty at 11:19 as Ryan Garbutt regained the one-goal lead for the visitors at 13:24, giving Brown a lead it would not relinquish.
The two teams then traded goals over the next 2:32 with each team skating four players. Senior Chris Poli briefly gave the Bears a 4-2 lead at 14:50. Before Dartmouth freshman Scott Fleming (Plainfield, Ont.) answered 1:06 later. Fleming took a shot on Rosen at the left post, redirecting the rebound around the goalie on the right.
The Bears killed three straight penalties during the first nine minutes of the third period to hold onto the lead. David Brownschidle increased Brown's lead to 5-3 at 12:46, knocking in the rebound of a shot by Garbutt.
Just 1:03 later, Dartmouth potted another on its first power play goal of the night. J.T. Wyman capitalized 17 seconds into the man-advantage with a slap shot from the point to make it a one-goal game for the fourth time of the night
Rosen finished with 38 saves while Big Green sophomore Dan Grossman (Foxboro, Mass.) made 19 saves for the Big Green. Dartmouth returns to action tomorrow evening with a 7:00 p.m. matchup against Yale. The game will be the last at home for five Big Green seniors as they will be honored after the contest.
