HANOVER, N.H. - Seniors Nick Johnson (Calgary, Alta.), J.T. Wyman (Wayzata, Minn.) and Jon Grecu (Calgary, Alta.) each recorded multiple-point games as the Dartmouth men's hockey team topped Yale, 7-2 on Saturday in Thompson Arena. The win improves the Big Green to 10-13-4, 5-12-3 in the ECAC while Yale falls to 12-10-4, 8-7-4 ECAC.
Johnson and Wyman got the Big Green on the board at 10:09 off the first of Dartmouth's four power play goals. Johnson passed up to Wyman on the point with Wyman immediately passing back down to the waiting Dartmouth captain who rifled the puck over netminder Billy Blase's shoulder for the 1-0 lead.
The Big Green senior line of Johnson, Wyman, Grecu recorded another power play strike at 16:34 of the second as Johnson shot down to Grecu who was waiting at the right post. Grecu lit the lamp a second time seven minutes later. Blase was sprawled out after making an initial save as Grecu was able to wrap the puck around the netminder's outstretched legs.
Yale was able to kill off two Dartmouth 5-on-3 opportunities late in the second half before Sean Backman was able to finally get his team on the board at 1:40. The Bulldogs seemed to have the momentum as the third period began but Josh Gillam (Peterborough, Ont.) put a stop to it with a sniper goal at 15:08. Joe Gaudet (Etna, N.H.) and Jon Wolter (Branford, Conn.) assisted and it was Wolter's first career point.
A laser from freshman defenseman Dan Markowitz (Jericho, N.Y.) at 12:11 gave Dartmouth a 5-1 lead. Gillam and Andrew Owsiak (Moose Jaw, Sask.) had the assists. Evan Stephens (Bessemer, Mich.) and Kyle Reeds (St. Louis, Mo.) teamed up for the Big Green's fourth power play at 8:39 as Stephens passed low to a waiting Reeds for the strike. Johson put a capper on the scoring with his wraparound at 6:00 before Yale's Sean Backman was able to get one more for the visitors.
Both teams made it interesting late in the game as things got a little out of control with 11 penalties being called in the final 7:57 of the contest.
Dartmouth had 18 shots in the first period as the Big Green ended up outshooting Yale, 36-to-31. Senior Mike Devine (Orchard Park, N.Y.) had 29 saves on the night while Blase finished with 29. The game concludes Dartmouth's season at home as the Big Green will be on the road next weekend with its final regular season contests against Cornell and Colgate.
