HANOVER, N.H. ? Dartmouth men's basketball fell behind early and could not recover as it dropped its Ivy League game tonight in Leede Arena against the University of Pennsylvania, 88-62.
Sophomore Elgin Fitzgerald (Colorado Springs, Colo.) joined the starting lineup for the Big Green, after a career performance last week against Cornell.
DeVon Mosley (Mesquite, Texas) led the Big Green in scoring, with 13 points to his name at the final buzzer. He was followed by Fitzgerald with 12 points and junior Alex Barnett (St. Louis, Mo.) with 11. Fitzgerald and Barnett also pulled down a team-high six rebounds apiece.
The Big Green got off to a rocky start, as Penn sank eight points before Dartmouth could respond with a basket of its own, a jumper from Marlon Sanders (Cleveland, Ohio). Head Coach Terry Dunn called for Dartmouth's first timeout before even a minute had elapsed. After another basket from Penn, the Big Green responded, going on a 10-point run to take the lead, 12-10.
From there, the score remained tight for most of the first half, but as the final minutes ticked away going into halftime, Penn began to pull away.
The Quakers kept their momentum in the second half, extending their lead over the Big Green. Dartmouth struggled at the boards, allowing Penn many second and third chances at the net. At the final buzzer, the Quakers had made 49 rebounds to the Big Green's 29. Dartmouth was also beaten beyond the arc, as Penn made more than 70 percent of their three-point shots, going 12-17.
The Big Green will play the final game of its homestand tomorrow, Feb. 23, against Princeton University at 7:00 pm.
