Princeton, N.J. ? The
Dartmouth women's basketball team shot a
sizzling 56 percent from the floor and four players scored in double-figures en
route to a 72-60 win at Princeton tonight.
It was yet another balanced effort for the Big Green, who had its most impressive shooting night of the season. Dartmouth moved to 10-14, 7-3
Ivy to remain in the hunt for the Ancient Eight title while Princeton
dropped to 5-20, 2-7 Ivy.
The Big Green had a balanced game, shooting over 54 percent
in both halves and hitting 66.7 percent of its threes. Three players scored 16
points including Koren Schram (Batesville, Ark.), Brittney Smith (Fort Worth,
Texas) and Betsy Williams (Norwich, Vt.).
Senior Kristen Craft (Marshalltown,
Iowa) was just behind with 13
points and four assists.
The teams opened up trading buckets, playing to an 11-11 tie
at 13:13. At 12:09, Williams hit the first of three Dartmouth triples - two from her and one from Schram to start a back-breaking 22-5 run
over the next eight minutes. The Tigers scored their five points early in that
time period and were held scoreless for seven minutes until Whitney Downs hit a
free-throw at 2:05 to make it 33-17. Princeton
was without a field goal for nine minutes before Jessica Berry hit a
buzzer-beating triple to make it 35-20 at the half.
Princeton regrouped and came back stronger in the second
half, opening with a 16-11 run in the first six minutes to cut the Dartmouth lead to 10
points, down 46-36 at 14:10. Brittney Smith sent a message with an offensive
putback at 13:32 to move the lead back to 12 points and the Tigers would never
cut the lead below 10 points. Smith's layup started a modest 8-2 Dartmouth run to rebuild
the lead and never look back.
Things stagnated late with both teams committing fouls and
turnovers, but Dartmouth
held out to take the 72-60 win.
The Big Green doubled up the Tigers on the boards, holding a
42-21 rebounding advantage. Smith posted yet another double-double with 16
points, 12 rebounds while Schram added five steals and three assists to her 16
points. Williams was a perfect 5-of-5 from the field including three triples. Sydney Scott (Houston, Texas) did a nice job on both ends of the floor in the post, racking up nine rebounds and seven points.
Meagan Cowher led Princeton
with 18 points while Caitlin O'Neill had 10.
Dartmouth
returns home to Leede Arena next weekend for a Friday night date with Cornell
at 7:00 p.m.
