SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - The Dartmouth men's hockey team recorded its second overtime
game of the weekend as the Big Green and Union
skated to a scoreless tie on Saturday at Messa Rink.
The 0-0 tie is Dartmouth's
first since a scoreless game against Maine
on Nov. 27, 2004 and it's the seventh in Big Green history. Dartmouth
netminder Mike Devine (Orchard Park,
N.Y.) had the sixth shutout of
his career, second this season. His first came on Nov. 9 in a 4-0 defeat of the
Dutchmen in Thompson Arena. The scoreless game is Union's first since 2005.
A scoreless first period of play had Union
with a close 8-to-5 advantage in shots on net as both teams had a power play
chance but were unable to capitalize. Neither side won the momentum advantage
as there were very few quality scoring chances.
Both sides showed more spunk in the second period as the
two had several chances to break the scoreless tie. Midway through the frame
the Big Green had a great scoring opportunity on a two-on-one by Rob Smith
(Brooks, Alta.) and Andrew Owsiak (Moose
Jaw, Sask.) but the
puck went wide.
Less than a minute later two shots by Nick Johnson (Calgary, Alta.) and one by Kyle Reeds (St. Louis, Mo.)
had the Big Green testing netminder Corey Milan.
The Dutchmen had several chances of their own but goalie Devine
was up to the task. Union went on the power
play in the final minute as both sides were able to put some shots on net late.
Dartmouth held
the shot advantage after two, 18-to-16.
Early in the final period Matt Cook's shot from the side
circle rang off the post but was unable to find the back of the net. In the
final minute of play the Dutchmen played a swarming offense putting five solid
shots on Devine but the netminder stood tall to stop every one as the two went
to the overtime still scoreless.
Devine finished with 40 saves while Milan recorded 32. Dartmouth
is now 8-11-4 overall, 3-10-3 in the league while Union's
record moves to 12-10-5, 7-5-4 in the ECAC.
The Big Green will be back in action at home next weekend
hosting Quinnipiac on Friday and Princeton on
Saturday. Game time for both will be 7:00 pm.
