HANOVER, N.H. - In a must-win game for the Dartmouth men's hockey, the Big Green responded with a 7-2 trouncing of league rival, Quinnipiac on Friday at Thompson Arena. The seven unanswered goals mark Dartmouth's highest scoring output of the season.
The Bobcats (17-8-4, 9-4-4 ECAC) jumped on the board with two goals midway through the first period. The Big Green (9-11-4, 4-10-3 ECAC) had its chances to tie the score as the home team ended the period in a flurry of shots but still went into the first break, scoreless.
Sophomore Josh Gillam (Peterborough, Ont.) helped his team start the momentum swing with his fifth goal in seven games just seven minutes into the second. Andrew Owsiak (Moose Jaw, Sask.) brought the puck down, trailing it behind to Gillam who slipped it past netminder Bud Fisher for the power play goal.
Kyle Reeds (St. Louis, Mo.) teamed up with linemates Nick Johnson (Calgary, Alta.) and Jon Grecu (Calgary, Alta.) for another strike at 13:48 before Scott Fleming (Plainfield, Ont.) scored a ricochet goal with under four minutes to go in the stanza as Johson picked up another helper along with Joe Stejskal (Grand Rapids, Minn.). The Big Green went into the second break with a 3-2 lead and the advantage in shots, 23-to-14.
Joe Gaudet (Etnam, N.H.) notched his seventh goal of the season early in the third period to give his a team a 4-2 lead. Gillam picked up the assist after taking a pass from Owsiak, skating behind the net and passing it to Gaudet on the left post.
Back-to-back Big Green goals at 13:05 and 13:56 gave Dartmouth an almost insurmountable lead. Owsiak potted his collegiate first before Grecu, Johnson and Reeds teamed up for another one.
Fleming scored his second of the night at 14:27 to give the Big Green its final tally. Stejskal and Peter Boldt (Greenwich, Conn.) picked up assists.
Dartmouth outshot the Bobcats, 43-to-23 for its fourth 40-plus shot game of the season. The victory ends Dartmouth's six-game nonwinning streak, the longest of the season.
Netminder Mike Devine (Orchard Park, N.Y.) finished with 21 saves while Fisher and Pat McGann combined for 36 saves. The victory gives Dartmouth revenge for a 5-3 win by Quinnipiac earlier this season.
The Big Green will take on Princeton tomorrow night at home in a 7:00 pm game.
