CLEARWATER, Fla. - Playing in its halted game against Penn State, the Dartmouth softball team was unable to weather the Nittany Lions as Penn State came away with a 7-0 victory in the first game for the Big Green on Saturday at the USF Under Armour Classic. In the afternoon game against Boston University, the Terriers notched runs in the second, third and fourth innings to take a 4-0 victory over Dartmouth.
The PSU game picked up where it was halted yesterday, bottom of the second with one out and the bases loaded for Penn State. Dartmouth pitcher Angela Megaw (Bomoseen, Vt.) worked against first baseman Angela Esparza to begin the day. With the count full, Esparaza lined into a double play to end the inning with the score still 0-0.
The Nittany Lions continued to work Megaw getting hits in the next two innings and finally scoring two in the fourth. Two more earned runs came across for Penn State in the fifth before three unearned runs in the sixth would be all the scoring in the game.
A walk issued to Alyssa Parker (Spring Valley, Calif.) by PSU pitcher Jenn Reynolds broke up the perfect game in the fifth and then a single by Nikki Yee in the sixth ended the no-hitter. Yee attempted to get her team in the board with a two-out single to third but she would remain at first.
Megaw went five innings before Stephanie Trudeau (Spokane, Wash.) came on in relief. Megaw gave up four earned runs while striking out four. None of the runs scored with Trudeau in the game were earned. Reynolds went the complete game for PSU giving up one hit, one walk and three strikeouts.
In the second game of the day freshman Devin Lindsay (Whittier, Calif.) earned the start on the mound for the Big Green. Unfortunately in three innings of work the rookie scattered four hits and three runs before Trudeau came on in relief.
Dartmouth finally got the bats going as the Big Green came away with six hits but unfortunately four runners were left on base. In the first three innings Dartmouth had a chance to get on the board as back-to-back players were able to get on base but were either left stranded or were out on double-plays.
Parker led her team going 2-for-4 on the day. Five other players all garnered one hit.
Dartmouth will close out the USF Under Armour Classic with a 2:00 pm matchup with Liberty University tomorrow.
