DELAND, Fla. - In a true pitcher's battle the Dartmouth softball team dropped a heartbreaking 2-1 game to Stetson University on Wednesday. Freshman pitcher Devin Lindsay (Whittier, Calif.) went the complete game as she struckout six Stetson batters.
The home team earned the victory after plating the winning run in the bottom of the tenth inning with the international tie breaker rule in effect. The win moves Stetson to 25-11 on the season while Dartmouth falls to 2-9.
Stetson jumped on the board first in the bottom of the opening frame. With one out Big Green starter Lindsay issued back-to-back walks before a single by Amanda Lindsay scored the one run of the inning.
Lindsay was able to shut down the Hatters through the next couple of innings, allowing just one walk but no more hits. On the other side Stetson starter Erica Demers had just two strikeouts but she was able to get the Big Green to ground out or pop the ball up as Dartmouth did not record a hit until the top of the fifth inning when Alyssa Parker (Spring Valley, Calif.) blasted a double to the left field fence. The hit broke up Demers' perfect game as she had not allowed a base runner. Unfortunately the runner stayed at second as the Big Green's woes of stranding batters continued.
The home team began its half of the fifth inning with a hit to center field, the Hatters first hit since the first inning. With two outs an intentional walk put runners at first and second for Stetson but Lindsay would strike the next batter out looking with her third strikeout of the contest.
Kirsten Costello (Windsor, N.Y.) began the sixth reaching second on a single and an error. A sacrifice bunt by Nikki Yee (Martinez, Calif.) moved Costello to third. Costello tied the game after Christy Autin (Harwood Heights, Ill.) flied out to left field, allowing the speedy sophomore to cross the plate, making the score 1-1.
In extra innings the Hatters were able to keep the Green off the board in the top of the eighth while garnering a two-out hit of their own. With a runner on and Stetson's cleanup hitter at the plate, Lindsay battled back from a 3-1 count for her fifth strikeout of the game sending the game into the ninth.
A one-out hit up the middle by Nicole Forbes in the bottom of the ninth gave the home team the possible winning run but the Big Green defense was up to the task and kept Forbes at first.
Audrey Kolodziej (Morton Grove, Ill.) began the top of the tenth at second base for Dartmouth. Ashley Gleason (Costa Mesa, Calif.) hit back to the pitcher on a bunt but Stetson tried to get Kolodziej at third. Tthe freshman was too fast as the Big Green put runners at first and second. A lineout and strikeout ended the inning for Dartmouth.
Blythe Golden was placed at second for Stetson in the bottom of the frame, moving to third on a sacrifice bunt. Lindsay's first walk since the beginning of the game gave the home team runners on the corners. A hit through the right side brought Golden home as the Hatters took the 2-1 win.
Lindsay earned her first complete game of the season with one earned run and six strikeouts. Demers also went the full game giving up just one hit with five strikeouts.
The Big Green will now return to the East Coast, traveling to Long Island, N.Y. to take on Stony Brook and Quinnipiac on the campus of Stony Brook University on Friday and Saturday.
