PRINCETON, N.J. - The Dartmouth softball team opened up league play at Princeton on Saturday. The Big Green played tough but the Tigers came away with two Ivy League victories, 4-3 and 8-2. The team will now come home as the doubleheader scheduled against Cornell on Sunday has been postponed due to unplayable conditions, a makeup date has not be set.
Dartmouth falls to 4-15 overall and 0-2 Ivy while Princeton improves to 5-17 and 2-0 in league play. The Tigers were unstoppable with the long ball as Princeton blasted seven home runs on the day, inclduing five in the second game.
In the opening contest the Big Green battled back matching Princeton's first two runs with two of its own including a home run by Ashley Gleason (Costa Mesa, Calif.) before taking the lead in the fifth inning. Unfortunately Princeton came right back to plate two in the bottom of the sixth to take a 4-3 victory. The Big Green was able to get eight hits on Tiger starter Kristen Schaus but left seven batters on the bases.
In the nightcap the Tigers used a four-run fifth inning after scoring in the first and third to take an 8-2 win over the visiting Dartmouth squad. The Big Green plated both its runs in the top of the fourth while recording seven hits in the contest and stranding nine.
Christy Autin (Harwood Heights, Ill.) led her team, going 4-for-8 in the two games while Kirsten Costello (Windsor, N.Y.) was right behind with three hits in six at-bats. The sophomore was also tops with two RBIs. Nikki Yee (Martinez, Calif.) led her team with two multiple-hits, a double and triple.
In the circle Angela Megaw (Bomoseen, Vt.) was the starter in Game One going only 5.1 innings before leaving the game with an injury. She gave up three earned runs while striking out one. Freshman Devin Lindsay (Whittier, Calif.) came on in relief. Lindsay pitched 6.2 innings on the day with seven earned runs and four strikeouts. Stephanie Trudeau (Spokane, Wash.) was the starter for Game Two but faced only two batters before Dartmouth's rookie, Lindsay, finished the game.
The Big Green will open up the home portion of its schedule on Tuesday, April 1 with a single game against Providence. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m. Next weekend Dartmouth continues at home hosting its second Ivy League weekend with doubleheaders against Columbia and Penn.
