HANOVER, N.H. ? With six runs on seven hits in the top of the fifth, Yale stormed back enroute to a 10-9 victory over the Dartmouth softball team in Game One on Saturday at Sachem Field. The Bulldogs continued their winning streak with a 6-0 shutout of the Big Green in Game Two.
With no outs a double by Katie Yanagisawa in the fifth inning put runners at second and third for the Bulldogs as Courtney Blachford came around to score. A single up the middle by Torres scored two more as Yale was down by just a run, 7-6. Stephanie Trudeau (Spokane, Wash.) came on in relief of Dartmouth starter Angela Megaw (Bomoseen, Vt.) before a bases loaded single by Lauren Huddleston put the go-ahead run across as Yale went up 8-7. Another single by Megan Enyeart scored one more as Yale closed the inning out with a two-run lead.
Dartmouth began the game with a hot bat early as doubles by Christy Autin (Harwood Heights, Ill.) and Katie Chifcian (Fullerton, Calif.) led off the first inning. Chifcian's blast to center field scored Autin before she came home on a wild pitch to put the Green up 2-0. Leigha Clarkson (Perris, Calif.) reached on a shot to left field that was dropped allowing her to go to second. A hit up the middle by Audrey Kolodziej (Morton Grove, Ill.) brought Clarkson home as the home team plated three to end the inning.
In the circle Megaw helped her team maintain its lead as she struck the first two Yale batters out in the second and got the third batter to line out. The Big Green tacked on another run in the bottom of the second. With two outs Kirsten Costello (Windsor, N.Y.) struck out but was safe on base after the first baseman dropped the ball on the tag. Autin, already on the bases moved to second and then while Costello came home after Chifican's laser of a hit made it to the fences.|
After loading the bases in the top of the third the Bulldogs brought one across on a wild pitch with runners at second and third giving Yale its first run of the game. An error at short allowed Aracelis Torres to score from third as Dartmouth's lead shrunk to two. A hit to right field by Holly Gutterud scored another run to make the score, 4-3.
Two errors by Yale in the bottom of the third put runners on the corners for the Big Green as Nikki Yee's (Martinez, Calif.) slapper up the middle brought Kolodziej home. A hit down the left field line by Autin scored Denise Hasson (Encino, Calif.) as the Big Green again went up by two, 6-3.
A single up by the middle by Alyssa Parker (Spring Valley, Calif.) in the fourth scored Chifcian as Dartmouth increased its lead to 7-3 after four complete. Another hit by Chifcian in the fifth scored her third run of the game as the Big Green got one back. With one out back-to-back singles by Kolodziej and J.J. Wright (Colleyville, Texas) put the go-ahead run at first. A walk issued to Yee loaded the bases as Autin walked to score Jackie Begay (Fort Defiance, Ariz.), tying the game at 9-9.
A hit by Allie Canulli put the first Yale runner on in the seventh before a Big Green throwing error put runners on the corners. A wild pitch in the dirt scored Canulli as Yale went up 10-9 with no outs and two one. A two-out walk loaded the bases for the Bulldogs but a groundout ended the inning as Yale walked away with the win.
Game Two was a much tighter affair as both teams had just two hits through three innings and no ball had left the infield.
In the top of the third the Bulldogs threatened after an infield single and throwing error put runners at second and third with no outs. A walk loaded the bases for Yale before a single by Gutterud scored one. Three more singles up the middle or to center field gave Yale a 3-0 lead before Trudeau came in to relieve Devin Lindsay (Whittier, Calif.). Two straight wild pitches brought another run home as the visitors went up 4-0. A fifth Yale run came across in the fourth as Dartmouth attempted to get its bats going.
A single up the middle by Parker in the bottom of the fourth gave Dartmouth its eighth runner of the day. A popup by Kolodziej moved the runners over but a ground out ended the inning as the Big Green had stranded five through four innings.
Yale plated a sixth run in the sixth with a double to center field to wrap up its scoring in the contest.
The victories improved the Bulldogs to 16-21-1 overall and 4-10 in the Ivy League while Dartmouth fell to 9-21, 5-9 Ivy. The two teams will meet again tomorrow in a doubleheader that is scheduled to begin at 12:00 pm.
