CAMBRIDGE, Mass. ? The Big Green men's tennis team capped off its season yesterday with a 7-0 loss to Harvard. Dartmouth went into the match knowing that it would have its work cut out for it if it was to win out over the undefeated Ivy Champions, but energy levels stayed high as the Big Green took to the courts.
Dartmouth lost the doubles point, despite an exciting upset from seniors
Mark Brodie (Greensboro, N.C.) and
Jeffrey Schechtman (Highland Park, Ill.), playing in the final game of their college careers. The pair defeated the #34 nationally-ranked and undefeated Harvard pair of Sasha Ermakov and Ashwin Kumar.
In singles, despite some quality play by the Green, Dartmouth was not able to bring home a match. Brodie lost in straight sets, with only one break of serve in each set.
Justin Tzou (Cupertino, Calif.), playing on a rolled ankle that occurred in doubles play, had a similar performance at No. 2.
Daniel Freeman (Chatsworth, Calif.) won his first set at No. 3, but lost his match in a super breaker, while Schechtman fell at No. 4.
Freshman
Curtis Roby (New York, N.Y.) got out of the gate fast and was up a break in the first set, but could not hold on for the win. With sophomore
Ari Gayer (Hollis, N.Y.) out with an injury,
David Fink (Roslyn Heights, N.Y.) took the No. 6 spot, winning the first match but, like Freeman, losing the super breaker.
Dartmouth finishes the season at 8-13 and 1-6 in the Ivy League after experiencing a series of ups and downs throughout the year. Five of the Big Green's losses were extremely close at 4-3, which was frustrating for the Dartmouth players, yet the Green saw highlights as well, such as the defeat of Princeton that broke 10 years of Tiger dominance in the series.
