HANOVER, N.H. ? The Harvard Crimson rebounded from a sweep by the Dartmouth softball team yesterday to take two Ivy League games from the Big Green on Sunday at Sachem Field. The Crimson won Game One, 4-2 and took Game Two, 5-2.
Back to back singles by Harvard in the first inning of Game One put runners at second and third. A groundout to the pitcher scored the Crimson's first run of the day. A single to left field plated another one as Jennifer Francis tallied the final run of the inning off a groundout to the shortstop. Big Green pitcher Angela Megaw (Bomoseen, Vt.) playing in the final game of her Dartmouth career struck out the next batter to get out of the inning.
A double by Kirsten Costello (Windsor, N.Y.) to the fence gave the Big Green its first base runner in the bottom half of the first but she would stay at second as Dartmouth was unable to cut into Harvard's lead.
The home team got one back in the bottom of the second off a solo homerun by Ashley Gleason (Costa Mesa, Calif.). Back-to-back runners in the bottom of the third had Dartmouth threatening for the first time in the game. A single through the left side by Katie Chifcian (Fullerton, Calif.) gave the Big Green its second run.
Harvard recorded its first hit since the opening frame in the top of the sixth but the runners would stay at first and second as Megaw and the Dartmouth defense shut down the Crimson. Harvard unfortunately tacked on one more in the top of the seventh but the Big Green was unable to counter as the visitors took the first game, 4-2.
Costello blasted a one-out single up the middle in the bottom of the first of Game Two and was moved to second on single by Chifcian. A walk to Alyssa Parker (Spring Valley, Calif.) loaded the bases for Dartmouth as a sacrifice fly to center field by Clarkson gave the Big Green its first run of the contest.
The Crimson took the lead in the top of the second off a home run to left field by Bailey Vertovez, plating two. Another sacrifice fly by the visitors in the top of the third gave Harvard a 3-1 lead.
Dartmouth cut into the Crimson lead off a bloop single that fell behind second base. Denise Hasson (Encino, Calif.) running for Leigh Clarkson (Perris, Calif.), legged it from second to plate another run.
Harvard extended its lead to two runs again in the top of the sixth on three straight singles. A two-out single by Emily Henderson with runners at second and third helped the Crimson to a 5-2 lead after six.
The Big Green made things interesting in the bottom of the seventh after back-to-back singles put runners at first and second. Autin was hit by a pitch to load the bases but two strikeouts by reliever Shelly Madick ended the inning and gave Harvard the win.
Dartmouth finishes its season with a 13-25 overall record, 9-12 in the Ivy League. Harvard moves to 24-20, 14-6 Ivy and will take on Princeton, winners of the Ivy South Division Title, next weekend in Princeton. The winner of that will determine who will get the automatic bid into the NCAA Softball Tournament.
