HANOVER, NH - Behind a three-hit shutout in the first game and four runs on seven hits in Game Two, Penn took an Ivy League doubleheader from the Dartmouth softball team on Sunday at Sachem Field. The losses drop the Big Green to 4-16, 0-4 Ivy while the victories move the Quakers to 18-8 overall and 5-1 in the league.
In the opening game the Quakers took a 4-0 victory behind strong pitching by Jessie Lupardus. The freshman went the complete game, allowing just three Dartmouth hits as she earned her 13th win of the season. In the nightcap Penn took advantage of Big Green miscues to take a 3-0 lead but the home team bounced back with three runs in the bottom of the third. The Quakers took the lead off a three-run inning of its own in the fifth while tacking on one more in the seventh for the 7-3 victory.
In the opener Penn had two runners reach base on a hit and a walk in the first inning but no runs would come across. The Big Green were held hitless until the bottom of fourth when Audrey Kolodziej (Morton Grove, Ill.) knocked an infield single but she was unable to tie the score at one. Penn tacked on another run in the sixth and two more in the seventh. Katie Chifcian (Fullerton, Calif.) and Christy Autin (Harwood Heights, Ill.) both were able to get singles for Dartmouth. Lupurdus struck out nine Big Green batters while allowing no walks. Angela Megaw (Bomoseen, Vt.) took the loss for Dartmouth as she allowed three earned runs with five strikeouts.
In Game Two the Big Green got behind early as a single, an error and three walks allowed the visitors to go up quickly, 2-0. A home run in the third gave Penn a 3-0 lead before Dartmouth came to bat in the bottom half of the third. Back-to-back extra base hits by Kirsten Costello (Windsor, N.Y.) with a double and Nikki Yee (Martinez, Calif.) with a triple got the Big Green back in the game. Costello came around on Yee's hit as Yee then came around on a single by Autin who crossed the plate off a hit by Alyssa Parker.
In the fourth pitcher Stephanie Trudeau (Spokane, Wash.) hit her second extra-base hit of the game but she would stay on the bases as Dartmouth was unable to break the 3-3 tie. The Quakers took the lead in the fifth after a double and a walk put runners on. After a sacrifice bunt Penn launched its second home run of the day, to go ahead, 6-3. A wild pitch would allow the Quakers to tack on another one in the seventh as Penn walked away with the sweep.
Devin Lindsay (Whittier, Calif.) started the game for Dartmouth as she went just one inning with three walks and two runs. Trudeau came on in relief going the rest of the game, striking out four. Emily Denstedt began the game in the circle for the Quakers but she was gone after three innings. Taylor Tieman came in to earn the win as Lupardus got her third save of the season.
Dartmouth continues at home with a doubleheader against Columbia. Game time is slated for 2:00 pm.
