CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Dartmouth women's volleyball team closed out the Harvard Invitational with a Saturday afternoon match against American University. The Eagles proved to be tough as the BIg Green fell in three games. Game scores were 25-13, 25-19 and 25-18. Due to her play in the three games, junior Megan MacGregor (Carlsbad, Calif.) was named All-Tournament.
"Obviously we would have liked to end with a win but this was a really good team we played today," said head coach Ann Marie Larese. "This kind of game is great experience for us because American had probably the biggest players we'll see all season and the pace of the game is a lot quicker was a lot quicker then we normally play. American is always tops in our region and I felt that we were really able to capitalize on some of their mistakes but unfortunately we made too many of our own."
American University went up quickly in the first game, 4-1 but kills by Madeline Baird (Austin, Texas) and errors on AU helped the Big Green tie things at four. The Eagles went up by three but Dartmouth kept hanging around. A kill by Morgan Covington (Katy, Texas) and another AU error had the Big Green down by just one at 8-7. The Eagles, behind the serving of Christina Nash, then rattled off eight straight points to pull ahead by nine. Despite two aces and a kill by MacGregor that gave Dartmouth 10 points American continued to pull ahead enroute to a 25-13 victory.
The Big Green quickly took the lead in Game Two as Baird recorded two kills but the Eagles stormed right back and took the lead. MacGregor helped her team stick around by recorded two straight kills as Dartmouth tied the score. The Eagles, however continued to pile on the points as AU went up by five. The Big Green was able to get kills here and there but could never get closer than four points as American took the win, 25-19.
In Game Three the two sides traded points early on before the Eagles started to pull away, going up by two. The Big Green would not go away however as Dartmouth tied the score at eight and then took a one-point lead. The two tied at 11 before AU capitalized on several opportunities and went up by three. The Big Green tied the game at 18 behind kills by MacGregor and Natalia Wrobel (La Jolla, Calif.) but the Eagles scored the next seven points to take the 25-18 victory.
Baird led her squad with 10 kills while MacGregor had eight kills and eight digs. Amber Bryant (Libertyville, Ill.) was tops with 10 digs.
Dartmouth will be back in action on Tuesday, opening at home against the University of New Hampshire. Game time is 7:00 pm.
