\HANOVER, N.H. - The Dartmouth women's volleyball team (2-3) had its home opener spoiled by in-state rival New Hampshire (3-8) as the Wildcats came away with a 3-0 victory on Tuesday. The Big Green made things interesting late in the match as Dartmouth attempted to mount a comeback in the third game but UNH was able to squelch the Big Green's plans, winning 25-20, 25-23, 28-26.
In the first game the two teams traded the lead until UNH's Lindsay Fogarty served her team to five straight points as the visitor's went up, 22-17. But behind the hitting of Megan MacGregor (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Amber Bryant (Libertyville, Ill.) the Big Green was able to close the gap but it was not enough.
In Game Two the Wildcats started quickly going up 7-4 before Fogarty helped her team to a six-point lead at 13-7. Dartmouth was not able to get closer than six points until Bryant came up to serve with the game at 23-18. Behind two service aces and three attacking errors the Big Green was down by just one before a serving error on Kendall Houston (Austin, Texs) gave UNH the win.
In the third game it was the home team that came out firing as Dartmouth took an 8-6 lead before Sara Heldman helped the Wildcats tie the game and go ahead by one. Neither team was able to get more than a two-point lead as the two sides eventually came to a tie at 19-19. Heldman helped notch the next three points before Bryant, Houston and Madeline Baird (Austin, Texas) helped the Big Green tied the score at 25. Morgan Covington's (Katy, Texas) two serves gave her team a short-lived lead before two straight kills by Fogarty ended the game.
Neither team was stellar in hitting as UNH had just a .142 percentage and Dartmouth had a .056. MacGregor led her team in hitting for the third time in four games with 13 kills. Bryant was tops with 17 digs while Covington had two solo blocks to go with four kills and two service aces.
The Big Green will be back in action on Thursday and Friday traveling to Army to participate in the Army Invitational with matches against Army, USC and Hartford.
