HANOVER, N.H. - Union potted two power play goals late in the contest to tie the Dartmouth men's hockey team, 2-2 in Thompson Arena on Saturday night. The tie gives the Big Green an 11-7-3 overall record, 8-4-2 in the ECAC while the Dutchmen are now 12-12-2, 5-8-1 ECAC.
Lane Caffaro had a hand in both Union goals as the senior defenseman potted a goal at 17:36 of the third and then assisted on the tying goal at 18:15. Both goals came on the power play as the Dutchmen had a 5-on-3 opportunity that scored one before an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty to Rob Pritchard (Burnaby, B.C.) scored another.
The Big Green jumped on the board with just :10 left in the opening frame when Peter Boldt shot the puck down while on the power play with it sailing over netminder Corey Milan's shoulder for the 1-0 score. Scott Fleming (Plainfield, Ont.) and Adam Estoclet (Orono, MInn.) assisted.
The second Dartmouth goal came early in the third period Pritchard gave his team the 2-0 lead on another power play strike. Evan Stephens (Bessemer, MIch.) passed over to Doug Jones (Marietta, Ga.) at the point as the freshman ripped it toward the net. Pritchard was able to get a stick down, helping the puck bounce past Milan for the score.
The overtime frame proved very entertaining as both sides managed three shots but neither could get the game winner. In net, the Big Green's Jody O'Neill picked up 48 saves in the tie as Milan had 25. O'Neill has racked up the saves against the Dutchmen as he had 47 earlier in the season.
Dartmouth will take to the road for its next set of contests. Traveling to Brown on Friday, Feb. 6 and Yale on Saturday, Feb. 7 for a set of ECAC Hockey games.
