HANOVER, N.H. - The Dartmouth women's soccer team picked up a 2-1 victory over instate rival New Hampshire this afternoon at Burnham Field.
The Big Green moved to 6-5 with the win while the Wildcats dropped to 2-11-1. It was a total team effort for Dartmouth, with 18 players seeing action and three rookies earning their first collegiate starts. The Big Green scored two assisted goals, with four players earning a point.
Dartmouth came out hard early, getting some good looks at goal but the Wildcats managed to hold off the attack. Senior Becky Poskin (Leawood, Kan.) slipped a great ball behind the defense for rookie Libby Hamlin (Vernon, Conn.) in the 20th minute, but it proved just a bit too strong for her to corrale. Aly O'Dea (Irvine, Calif.) crossed the ball from the right side in the 23rd and it actually turned into a shot, going just high of the crossbar.
The Green finally broke through in the 26th minute when Hamlin beat the defense to score her first collegiate goal in the first half off a nice thru ball from Ally Dutton (Granite Bay, Calif.) to go up 1-0.
The Wildcats had a good chance at the equalizer in the 28th minute with a breakaway for a one-on-one with keeper Anna Chinco (Sacramento, Calif.) but the sophomore won the foot race, sliding to beat the UNH striker to the ball. Dartmouth countered with a couple of near misses by Dutton and Poskin but could not get another before the half. In the 38th, New Hampshire's Alyssa Michel had another breakaway but Dartmouth backs Aurelia Solomon (Washington, D.C.) and Erin Fleischli (San Mateo, Calif.) raced back to clear the ball.
Dartmouth wasted little time in the second half, adding an insurance goal that would ultimately prove the winner in the 53rd minute. Senior Kelsey Quick (Bernardsville, N.J.) scored a beautiful goal from the right side after a feed from classmate Ali Hubbard (Marshfield, Mass.). Just a few minutes later Chinco made a leaping save on an attempt by UNH's Drea Nogueria and cleared the ensuing corner kick. On the counterattack, Hamlin broke on the left side and fired but New Hampshire keeper Sarah Dobush made the stop.
Poskin looked to have the game's third goal in the 65th when her shot from the right side hit the far post, appeared to be hooking back in but bounced and cleared away from the goalline. New Hampshire upped the pressure late in the game and managed to get on the board with just over eight minutes to play. Capitalizing on a defensive miscue by Dartmouth, Shaunna Kaplan played the ball up for Brooke Duchaney who was wide open and beat Chinco with an arcing shot over her head, making it 2-1.
The Dartmouth lead held up down the stretch for the 2-1 final. The Big Green ultimately outshot the Wildcats, 13-10 in the game. Chinco finished with four saves in goal for the victory in her first start of the season.
Next up for the Big Green is a critical Ivy showdown at Penn this Saturday night, Oct. 17 at 5 p.m. in Philadelphia.
