HANOVER, N.H. - The Dartmouth men's hockey team (0-1, 0-1 ECAC) scored the first goal of the game but the next five went to Harvard (1-0, 1-0 ECAC) as the Crimson spoiled the Big Green's opener, 5-3.
Rob Smith (Brooks, Alta.) got the home team on the board quickly in the first period but Harvard was not going to allow that goal to stand as Alex Killorn scored the first of his three points with only 1:27 left in the frame.
The second period was all Harvard as the Crimson potted three goals to take a 3-1 lead. Despite outshooting the visitors 21-8 in that frame, the Big Green was unable to put anything past Harvard netminder Kyle Richter (1-0).
The Crimson put two more past Jody O'Neill (Nepean, Ont.) (0-1) to open the third before Adam Estoclet (Orono, Minn.) and Evan Stephens (Bessemer, Mich.) combined for a crowd-inducing goal at 11:07. Assistant captain Scott Fleming (Plainfield, Ont.) also picked up an assist. Joe Gaudet (Etna, N.H.) gave the Big Green some life at 13:31 scoring a nice goal on a pass from Kyle Reeds (St. Louis, Mo.). Initially the Crimson signaled no goal but linesman Bret Reed adamantly pointed at the line and after review it was found the goal was good.
Dartmouth pressured hard and often in the waning minutes of the game. Sophomore Connor Goggin (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) hammered the puck in with a pass that sent Richter's water bottle flying as the goalie lost his stick but the Crimson defense held as the Big Green could get no more past the junior goalie.
Dartmouth will continue with ECAC Hockey action next weekend with a road trip to Cornell on Friday and Colgate on Saturday.
