PRINCETON, N.J. — Dartmouth freshman strong safety
Garrett Waggoner (Sarasota, Fla.) was honored as the Ivy League Football Rookie of the Week for his play in a 14-7 overtime loss at Brown this past Saturday. He is the second consecutive Big Green player to earn the distinction as quarterback
Greg Patton took home the award last week.
Waggoner was at the forefront of one of Dartmouth's best defensive showings of the season, holding a potent Bear offense to less than 300 yards and seven points in regulation. The game never would have reached overtime had Waggoner not batted down a pass to a wide-open Brown receiver near the end zone in the waning seconds as he streaked across the field to make the play.
The rookie contributed a season-high nine tackles in the game, seven of the solo variety. One of his stops came behind the line of scrimmage, and he broke up two passes on the day.
Waggoner was one of three freshmen starting on the defensive unit for the Big Green along with six sophomores to make Dartmouth one of the youngest defenses in the country.
Two other Dartmouth players were listed on the league's honor roll — sophomore receiver
Michael Reilly and sophomore linebacker
Diego Fernandez-Soto. Reilly caught the only score of the day for the Green, a screen pass that he caught then weaved his way 77 yards to reach the end zone. Fernandez-Soto led the defense with 10 tackles, six solo, with one going for a loss of three yards.
Dartmouth (2-7, 2-4 Ivy) finishes the 2009 season at home on Saturday when Princeton (3-6, 2-4 Ivy) comes to Hanover for the Big Green's Senior Day at 12:30 p.m.
