HANOVER, N.H. - The Dartmouth men's hockey team put up a three-goal lead on St. Lawrence enroute to its first win of the season. The Saints attempted a come back but the Big Green held on for the 3-2 victory.
Scott Fleming (Plainfield, Ont.) potted the first goal of the game early in the opening period. The assistant captain won the draw in the SLU end, passing back to Peter Boldt (Greenwich, Conn.) on the blueline, Boldt quickly passed over to Adam Estoclet (Orono, Minn.) who got the puck on Fleming's stick for the score.
Doug Jones (Marietta, Ga.) gave his team a two-goal lead midway through the frame with a power play goal that netminder Kain Tisi never saw. Evan Stephens (Bessemer, Mich.) and Joe Stejskal (Grand Rapids, Minn.) worked the puck back and forth on the blueline finally getting down to a waiting Jones who roofed the puck over Tisi for the goal.
The Saints put pressure on the Big Green late in the frame with a power play chance that had both goalie Jody O'Neill (Nepean, Ont.) and defenseman Connor Goggon (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) making some great saves to keep St. Lawrence off the board as Dartmouth held its lead going into the break.
The Big Green increased its lead off another hard working power play goal at 7:21 of the second. Stephens passed down to Dustin Walsh (Shannonville, Ont.) to the left of the cage. Walsh immediately got a look at Gaudet, getting the puck to the senior who had already taken a shot on Tisi that was saved, this time the netminder couldn't stop the hard shot by the assistant captain.
SLU ended the shutout with less than 25 seconds left in the second with a power play goal by Derek Keller. Keller took a pass from a fellow blueline shooting down on O'Neill as it sailed between the sophomore's legs for the goal.
Late in the game with both sides pressuring O'Neill made a huge glove save with less than three minutes to play but 20 seconds later the Saints came back with a Travis Vermeulen goal as Dartmouth's lead was cut to one.
With the goalie out of the net and a Big Green player in the box, St. Lawrence worked a 6-on-4 advantage for over 20 seconds but Dartmouth was up to the challenge, stopping all shots and grabbing it's first win of the season.
O'Neill finished with 33 saves while Tisi had 40 for SLU as the Big Green outshot the Saints, 43-35.
Dartmouth continues at home, playing its first nonconference game of the season on Friday, Nov. 27 against Providence at 7:00 pm.
