HANOVER, N.H. - Junior Scott Fleming scored twice as the Dartmouth (2-6-0) men's hockey team defeated Providence (7-5-1), 4-2 in a non-conference game on Friday in Thompson Arena.
In the first period both teams had some chances as Providence ended the frame outshooting Dartmouth, 15-13 but neither side had a goal to show for it. Late in first the Big Green looked like it was going to get the first score as Dustin Walsh (Shannonville, Ont.) took a pass from Matt Reber (Edina, Minn.) putting a shot on net that was saved to a trailing Scott Fleming (Plainfield, Ont.) who had a point-blank save that was also saved.
Less than a minute into the second, Dartmouth had two great chances right off the opening faceoff as both Doug Jones (Marietta, Ga.) and Evan Stephens (Bessemer, Mich.) rang the puck off the post.
Perseverance finally paid off for the home team as the Big Green got the first one on the board 5:43 into the stanza. A battle behind the net had Reber throwing the puck out to a waiting Fleming in front as the junior one-timed it past Friars goalie Justin Gates. Adam Estoclet (Orono, Minn.) also picked up an assist.
PC came roaring back with Chris Eppich taking a shot on Jody O'Neill (Nepean, Ont.) that the sophomore acrobatically saved. Unfortunately the next Providence shot was able to get past O'Neill as the visitors knotted the score at 1-1.
The Big Green took the lead back at 8:06 when a two-on-one with Fleming and Reber had the classmates teaming up for the second goal of the game. Reber and Fleming skated in alone on Gates with Fleming shooting glove-side for his second of the night. Jim Gaudet (Etna, N.H.) also assisted.
Midway through the frame Dartmouth took a two-goal lead after consecutive shots by Josh Gillam (Peterborough, Ont.) and Jim Gaudet before Gillam's second shot made it past Gates for his first goal of the season.
Dartmouth made it 4-1 after Reber potted his first of the year. Estoclet took the faceoff in the Big Green end and battled for it as the puck came out to Fleming at the blue line. Fleming quickly made a shot pass to a streaking Reber who went one-on-one with Gates, shooting stick-side on the netminder.
The Friars added one late in the contest but it was not enough as Dartmouth held on for the victory.
O'Neill finished with 45 saves, just three off his career high. Bates had 29 for Providence.
The Big Green will continue with its stretch of Thanksgiving games, traveling to Harvard on Sunday at 4:00 pm for another non-conference affair.
