CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Riding a two-game win streak and some recent confidence the Dartmouth men's hockey team was looking for a better outcome against Harvard then its previous game, a loss to the Crimson on Oct. 30. The result was definitely better than expected as the Big Green picked up its third win of the season and defeated Harvard, 6-2 in a non-conference contest. The win was Dartmouth's first in Cambridge in over a decade.
"What a huge win for us," said head coach Bob Gaudet. "Not only in terms of gaining confidence but also in beating a really good hockey team in their own barn. It was a great game on both sides and I'm really proud of the guys for sticking with it."
Scott Fleming (Plainfield, Ont.) kept his scoring streak alive as the junior potted three points. He started the day off with a goal at 10:02 of the first. A faceoff in the Dartmouth (3-6) end was won by the the Big Green. Adam Estoclet (Orono, Minn.) shot the puck up and across the ice to Fleming who waiting alongside the boards. The assistant captain just shot down on Harvard (1-5-2) goalie Ryan Carroll, with the puck sailing into the back of the net stick side.
A second Big Green goal at 2:48 of the first had the visitors going to the locker room with a 2-0 lead. Dartmouth's top line of Dustin Walsh (Shannonville, Ont.), Doug Jones (Marietta, Ga.) and Joe Gaudet (Etna, N.H.) combined for the score as the Big Green went into the break with the advantage in shots, 15 to 10.
Early into the second period the Crimson cut the lead to one with a power play strike at 18:17. A shot by Alex Fallstrom on netminder Jody O'Neill was saved out to Daniel Moriarty who put the puck over the legs of the diving goalie for the score.
With 4:04 left in the stanza the Big Green was putting tremendous pressure on Carroll as back-to-back goals by Dartmouth had the visitors in the drivers seat going into the last break of the game. Evan Stephens (Bessemer, Mich.) lit the lamp for the first time this season before Estoclet picked up his second goal of the year less than :40 seconds later. Alex Goodship (Blackfalds, Alta.) picked up his first assist on Stephens goal as Rob Smith (Brooks, Alta.) also assisted. Fleming got his second point of the contest with an assist on Estoclet's goal as Peter Boldt (Greenwich, Conn.) recorded a helper on the same strike.
Dartmouth ended the frame outshooting the Crimson, 29-15.
Harvard cut into the Big Green's lead again early in the third frame with its second power play tally of the contest. An initial save by Jody O'Neill and then a defensive save by Kyle Reeds (St. Louis, Mo.) had the puck landing on the stick of Moriarty as he one-timed it past O'Neill for his second goal of the contest.
Fleming added to his totals as he and Matt Reber (St. Louis, Mo.) teamed up on a give-and-go that sailed past Carroll for the score at 15:16. Linemate Estoclet picked up an assist as well.
Josh Gillam added the final goal at 1:54 with an empty net strike that was assisted on by Stephens.
O'Neill finished with 25 saves while Carroll had 35 for the Crimson.
Dartmouth will be back in action on Sunday, Dec. 13 with a non-conference game against Sacred Heart at Thompson Arena. The game will not only be military appreciation night but will also be the Big Green's annual toy drive for the Children's Hospital at Dartmouth.
