HANOVER, N.H.- The Dartmouth women's hockey team netted a season-high three power play goals from three different scorers as the Big Green defeated Vermont, 4-2, in a northern border battle.
Dartmouth (6-5-1) saw senior co-captain Sarah Parsons (Dover, Mass.) and junior Amanda Trunzo (Andover, Minn.) collect two points with a goal and an assist apiece. Senior co-captain Jenna Cunningham added two assists in the win, while freshmen Camille Dumais (Beaconsfield, Que.) and Sally Komarek (Minneapolis, Minn.) tallied power play goals. In net, senior Mariel Lacina (London, Ont.) got the win after pushing aside 18 shots.
The Catamounts (5-11-1) got goals from Celeste Doucet and Chelsea Furlani, while Chelsea Rapin and Hanna Westbrook added assists. Kristen Olychuck got the start in net for Vermont and made 34 stops in the loss.
After a scoreless first period, the two teams each got on the board with power play goals in the second frame. Vermont struck first with 8:20 remaining with an extra-skater score from Doucet with the assist to Rapin. Rapin skated in from the right end line and put shot on net that Lacina stopped, but Doucet collected the loose puck and beat Lacina high to the blocker side.
Dartmouth evened the score in the final minute of the period on a power play goal from Trunzo for her second man advantage goal of the season. Cunningham passed the puck to Parsons at the top of the left circle and she shifted it over to Trunzo. She blasted a shot from the center point and it glanced off the glove of Olychuck and into the net to tie the score at 1-1.
The third period was filled with action as teams combined for four goals in the 20 minute frame.
Dartmouth took its first lead of the game on a power play goal from Komarek and she fought in front of the net on a rebound and beat Olychuck for the 2-1 lead. Assists went to freshman Sasha Nanji (Markham, Ont.) and sophomore Jenna Hobeika (Alpine, N.J.).
With just under four minutes remaining, Dumais gave the Big Green a comfortable 3-1 lead with another Dartmouth power play goal. She took a pass from Trunzo and connected on a shot from the right circle, which beat Olychuck to the near post for the score. Cunningham also assisted on the play.
Furlani got Vermont back to within one with a man advantage goal herself to make it 3-2. However, with the goalie pulled, Parsons closed out the game with an empty netter with 41 seconds to play.
The Big Green finished the night with three goals on the advantage in eight opportunities, while the Catamounts ended up with two goals in seven chances. Dartmouth won the shot battle with a 38-20 advantage.
Next up for the Big Green is Connecticut this coming weekend down in Storrs, beginning on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m., followed by another 1 p.m. start on Sunday.
