No. 8 Women's Hockey Skates to 3-3 Tie with Cornell

ITHACA, N.Y. ? The eighth-ranked Dartmouth women's hockey team came back from two goals down in the final period of play, but could not get over the final hurdle as the Big Green settled for a 3-3 tie against Cornell on Saturday evening.

For Dartmouth (16-7-3, 13-4-3 ECAC, 7-2-1 Ivy), senior Julia Bronson (Arlington, Va.) posted a two-point night with a power play goal and an assist, while classmate Maggie Kennedy (West Hartford, Conn.) recorded a pair of assists. Junior Jenna Cunningham (Medicine Hat, Alta.) and sophomore Amanda Trunzo (Andover, Minn.) each tallied goals for the Big Green. Senior netminder Carli Clemis (Taber, Alta.) pushed aside 40 shots to earn the tie.

For Cornell (11-11-5, 7-8-5 ECAC), Emma Chipman led the way with a goal and an assists and Catherine White posted a pair of helpers in the tie. Rebecca Johnston and Liz Zorn were the other two scorers for the Big Red and Jenny Niesluchowski settled for the tie with 34 saves between the pipes.

Cornell broke the ice in the opening period with just under four minutes remaining to take a 1-0 lead. Chipman was given the goal with White and Chelsea Karpenko earning the assists.

Dartmouth was outshot in the opening period by a 14-10 margin and couldn't score on two power play opportunities. Cornell had one chance with the extra skater and didn't convert.

In the second period, the Big Red built its lead to 2-0 on a power play goal from Johnston, 2:32 into the frame with the assists going to White and Sam Wauer. For White, it was her second helper of the night.

The Big Green got one back only 24 seconds after Johnston's score to cut the lead in half at 2-1. Cunningham netted the even strength goal with the assist going to freshman Kelly Foley (Boston, Mass.).

The second frame belonged to the Big Red again with a 15-10 advantage in shots, while Dartmouth had one chance on the man advantage and didn't score. Johnston scored the important second goal on the power play as Cornell went 1-for-3 with the extra skater.

Cornell increased its lead back to two goals with 12:47 left in the final period as Zorn netted the Big Red's third goal of the night with the assists going to Kaylee Overguard and Chipman.

The Big Green, however, kept fighting and with 8:55 remaining in the period, Trunzo cut the lead back to one at 3-2 with her team-leading ninth power play goal of the season. Kennedy and Bronson were credited for the assist. Dartmouth got back on the track on the power play after going scoreless in multiple opportunities last night at Colgate.

The power play did it for Dartmouth again, just three minutes later as Bronson netted the second extra-man goal on the night for the Big Green to tie the game at 3-3. Seniors Kennedy and co-captain Shannon Bowman (Leamington, Ont.) earned the helpers.

In the extra period, Dartmouth was able to earn two shots to only one by the Big Red, but neither team could find the back of the net.

The Big Green was outshot by the Big Red, 43-37, while Dartmouth got two power play goals on six chances and Cornell netted one extra man goal in seven opportunities.

With the tie, the Big Green lost its chance at earning its ninth Ivy League title as Dartmouth fell one point short of Harvard for the title. The Crimson beat Cornell last night to earn the title outright.

The Big Green will be back in action this coming weekend for their final home weekend of the regular season. Dartmouth will be hosting Clarkson on Friday night for the second annual Pink at the Rink promotion, beginning at 7 p.m. Friday night's game will be followed by Senior Day on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. against nationally-ranked and league-leading St. Lawrence.
