Men's Tennis Settles for Draw at Cal Poly Due to Weather

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The Dartmouth men's tennis team jumped into its spring trip with a 3-3 draw at Cal Poly on Saturday evening by winning the doubles point.

The Green started strong today against a solid Cal Poly team by winning the doubles point. The No. 1 team of junior Dan Freeman (Chatsworth, Calif.) and sophomore Stephen Greif (San Antonio, Texas) started off with a break to go up 3-0 and never looked back in their 8-5 win. A new No. 3 team of junior Justin Tzou (Cupertino, Calif.) and freshman Chris Ho (Los Altos, Calif.) kept even until six all, when they broke serve and Tzou served it out for the win and the team point.

Singles started out with Greif at No. 2 and sophomore Curtis Roby (New York, N.Y.) at No. 3 winning their first sets but the rest of the squad dropped its matches. Freeman at No. 1 and freshman Michael Laser (Glencoe, Ill.) at No. 6 came roaring back by winning their second sets. All even in four spots, both Tzou and senior captain Ari Gayer (Hollis, N.Y.) dropped their matches in breakers. Now in four third sets, Freeman put the Big Green on the board in singles tying it up and Roby put Dartmouth out in front 3-2. Laser, after toughing it out in the 3rd set, finally dropped his match in a last set breaker 8-10.

Now the team match was exciting at the No. 2 position with Greif up a break in the second, but after a very long battle he dropped the set in a breaker. After the lights were turned on due to darkness, Greif help in the first game of the third as did the Cal Poly player in the second. At 1-1, the match was called due to rain and the teams had to settle for a 3-3 draw.

The match is schedule to continue on Monday at 12 p.m.
