HANOVER, N.H. - The Dartmouth softball team began its season with a three-game win streak before dropping two contests to host Florida Gulf Coast at the FGCU Tournament last weekend. The Big Green looks to build on its momentum from last week with four games at the University of Maryland's Round Robin Tournament on March 8 and 9.
The Terrapins' four-team tournament will feature Dartmouth, Gardner-Webb and Manhattan. The Big Green takes on Gardner-Webb at 10:00 am on Saturday before playing host Maryland at noon. On Sunday Dartmouth and Manhattan square off at 9:00 am before the tournament concludes with consolation and championship games scheduled for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. that day.
Juniors Alyssa Parker (Spring Valley, Calif.) and Kirsten Costello (Windsor, N.Y.) along with rookie Molly Khalil (Seal Beach, Calif.) have been instrumental to the team's success thus far in 2009. Parker's team-leading batting average (.533) and five RBIs pace the squad as Costello's .417 and Khalil's .400 are second and third best. Parker has blasted two of the team's three home runs this season while Khalil has knocked three extra-base hits.
Freshman Kat Hicks (Templeton, Calif.) has pitched her way to success with a
team-leading 2.61 ERA. She has made two total appearances and earned a victory against Colgate. Hicks' classmate Hillary Barker (Duvall, Wash.) has a 1-1 record as she's made four appearances with one complete game. She leads the team in innings pitched with 14.1 and strikeouts with 11. Sophomore Devin Lindsay (Whittier, Calif.) also has a 1-1 record as she's appeared in three games with one complete. Last Time Out
Dartmouth concluded last weekend's Florida Gulf Coast Tournament with a 3-2 record, beating Bryant, St. Francis and Colgate while falling to host FGCU twice. The Big Green took a tournament-opening 8-3 win over Bryant followed by a 3-2 nine inning victory over St. Francis before Dartmouth's pitching staff posted its first shutout of the season
during a 2-0 shutout of Colgate.
Dartmouth has met up with both Gardner-Webb and Manhattan previously but has not played Maryland during the Big Green's 13 years of playing softball. Gardner-Webb won the only meeting between the two schools while Dartmouth holds a 2-0 record over Manhattan. The Big Green and the Jaspers met in both 1997 and 2000.
