COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Dartmouth softball team (4-3) exploded for 12 runs in a 12-3 victory over Gardner-Webb in its first game of the Maryland Round Robin Tourney. But the host Terps came back to take Game Two, 6-0.
In the opening game, the Big Green used one run in the first along with two runs in both the fourth and fifth before exploding for seven in the top of the sixth. The Bulldogs were leading 2-1 going into the fourth when Dartmouth took the lead it never relinquished.
Kirsten Costello (Windsor, N.Y.) began the Big Green's big inning with a walk before moving to second on a Christy Autin (Harwood Heights, Ill.) single to first base. The bases were loaded after Nikki Yee (Martinez, Calif.) singled to third. Senior Ashley Gleason (Costa Mesa, Calif.) came to the plate and batted a double that plated two as the Big Green began its scoring frenzy. Leigha Clarkson (Perris, Calif.) then singled to left field scoring Yee and Gleason. A one-out single by Molly Khalil (Seal Beach, Calif.) scored Clarkson before a Kat Hicks (Templeton, Calif.) home run brought all around.
Yee was 4-for-4 with one run while both Autin and Khalil were 3-for-4 with two runs apiece. In the cirle Devin Lindsay (Whittier, Calif.) went the complete game, earning her second win of the season. The sophomore gave up just two earned runs while striking out seven.
In the second game of the day Maryland scored two runs in the second, one in the third and three in the fifth to take the 6-0 win. The 'Terps had two pitchers combined for the shutout as no Dartmouth players were able to record a hit.
Hillary Barker (Duvall, Wash.) went the distance for the Big Green as she gave up just one earned run.
Dartmouth will be back in action tomorrow with a 9:00 am matchup with Manhattan before the consolation/championship contests later in the afternoon.
