AMHERST, Mass. - The Dartmouth softball team lost a 5-0 game to UMass in a contest that was shortened due to heavy rain in the Amherst area. Freshman pitcher Hillary Barker (Duvall, Wash.) had a no-hitter going through three innings.
Ashley Gleason (Costa Mesa, Calif.) had the only hit for the Big Green in the first inning but UMass pitcher Brandice Balschmiter retired the next 16 Dartmouth batters to lead the home team to the win.
UMass improves to 16-6 while Dartmouth falls to 10-12 on the year.
Wednesday's game started as a pitcher's dual, as Gleason's infield single was the game's lone hit going into the bottom of the fourth inning, but it was then that the UMass bats came alive. Two hits drove in two runs before three hits, two of them extra-base knocks, allowed the Minutewomen to go up 5-0.
Balschmiter sandwiched two strikeouts around a groundout in the top of the sixth, before the umpires called the game as the rain began to fall harder.
Barker (5-6) allowed five hits and walked one while striking out five in the loss.
The Big Green returns to action this weekend with an Ivy League weekend on tap. Dartmouth will host Princeton at Sachem Field at 12:30 on Saturday with a matchup on Sunday against Cornell, again at 12:30.
