BURLINGTON, Vt. - A pitching duel ensued on Thursday between twin-state rivals Dartmouth (20-18) and Vermont (7-33). The Big Green's Kat Hicks (Templeton, Calif.) pitched the complete game as the Cats broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the eighth inning with the game winner.
Hicks went 7.2 innings giving up just one earned run while striking out five batters. The loss is just her second of the season. For UVM, Alison Daggett started the game and went five innings, giving up the lone Dartmouth run. Jocelyn Abaray came on in relief and held the Big Green scoreless over the next three innings.
A triple by Nikki Yee (Martinez, Calif.) in the top of the fifth plated Christy Autin (Harwood Heights, Ill.) who had reached base after being issued a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kirsten Costello (Windsor, N.Y.) but that was all the scoring for the visitors.
Despite getting runners on base several times during the next three innings Dartmouth was unable to come through with the winning run.
For the Catamounts in the bottom of the eighth a one-out single put the winning run on base before a double to left field by Jeanine Connolly plated Rachelle Boone for the 2-1 victory.
Audrey Kolodziej (Morton Grove, Ill.) was the top hitter on the day for the Big Green as she went 2-for-3 with a double.
Dartmouth will be back in action on Saturday at 2:00 pm against Ivy rival Harvard at Sachem Field. The Big Green and the Crimson are battling for the Northern Division title as Dartmouth currently holds just a one-game lead in the standings.
