HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth Men's Hockey team dropped a 4-2 decision to Holy Cross in the consolation game of the Ledyard National Bank Classic on Sunday in Thompson Arena. The loss drops the Big Green to 3-10 while the Crusaders improved to 5-10-4.
Holy Cross got on the board first with a power play strike in the waning minutes of the first period. Just 50 seconds into the power play the Crusaders worked the puck around and powered past netminder Jody O'Neill (Nepean, Ont.) with a tic-tac pass that resulted in a goal for Rob Forshner.
Despite outshooting the visitors and having several great chances, the Big Green was unable to get on the board and went into the break down, 1-0.
Holy Cross started the second with 4:00 minutes of power play time after a five-minute major was issued to Kyle Reeds (St. Louis, Mo.) in the final minute of the first period.
The Crusaders took at two-goal lead with 3:45 left in the major penalty at 18:28 of the second frame. A goal much like its first, Holy Cross worked the puck around in front and put it past O'Neill glove side.
The Big Green again had some great chances. Josh Gillam amost gave the home team its first goal midway through the frame but his shot trickled just wide of the post.
After some hard work, Reeds was able to finally get the puck in the back of the net for Dartmouth as Joe Gaudet (Etna, N.H.) and Rob Smith (Brooks, Alta.) assisted on the play.
The Big Green opened the third period with one player in the box and another going in shortly after the clock began. The Crusaders used the 5-on-3 advantage to tally their third power play goal of the game at 18:29 of the final frame off a shot by Mike Daly.
Dartmouth began to make things interesting in the final minutes. Head coach Bob Gaduet pulled O'Neill for the extra skater with over 2:00 to play. The Big Green was able to get several shots on net but could not get the puck in. Then with 1:35 showing a delayed penalty had O'Neill coming out again as Doug Jones (Marietta, Ga.) was finally able to put one past goalie Thomas Tysowsky. Joe Gaudet (Etna, N.H.) and Dustin Walsh (Shannonville, Ont.) assisted.
Walsh almost tied the game up just a few seconds later as he tried to bat the puck past Tysowsky but it flew just over the net. With O'Neill out again the Crusaders sailed the puck down ice and got the empty net strike to end the game with its fourth goal of the game.
The Big Green will began ECAC Hockey play again with matchups against Brown and Yale next weekend. The Bears come to town on Friday, Jan. 8 at 7:00 while Dartmouth and Yale will square off on Sunday at 4:00 pm.
