Chestnut Hill, Mass. - A double-double by Carolyn Swords propelled ACC foe Boston College to an 84-46 victory over the Dartmouth women's basketball team tonight at Conte Forum.
The 6-6 Swords had 18 points and 12 rebounds to lead Boston College's potent post attack. The Big Green had no answer for BC's inside game, featuring Swords and the 6-4 Stephanie Murphy who propelled the Eagles to 54 of their 84 points scored in the paint.
Dartmouth, which used all 11 available players, did not have a player score in double-figures or a rebounder with more than four caroms. Brittney Smith (Fort Worth, Texas) struggled inside but managed eight points while Jalea Moses (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Sasha Dosenko (Kiev, Ukraine) each had seven points.
Dartmouth (4-9) battled on the boards though Boston College (9-6) wound up with a 33-28 advantage.
Boston College hammered Dartmouth in the first half, building an insurmountable 25-point lead. While BC's post players had their way on offense, they also presented a problem defensively, where the Big Green could not get to the free-throw line despite the Eagles' physical play.
BC jumped out to an early 7-0 lead in the contest before Dosenko scored Dartmouth's first points to make it 7-2 at 17:31. Betsy Williams made it 7-4 on the next possession, but that would be it offensively for Dartmouth for a long stretch. The Eagles got the ball to Swords inside and she powered them on a 17-0 run, capped with one of her own layups to go ahead 24-4 at 10:43. Brittney Smith final broke the drought with a free throw at 9:58 and a Faziah Steen (Kalamazoo, Mich.) drive resulted in the first bucket in nearly eight minutes made it 24-7 at 9:14.
Betsy Williams (Norwich, Vt.) answered a Swords layup with a jumper to make it 26-9 at 8:02, but BC went on an 8-0 run before McFee drove the lane to make it 34-11 at 3:24. Dartmouth got just one more bucket in the half, when Smith finally scored inside with 33 seconds to play after posting up numerous times without scoring or getting to the line.
Dartmouth came out with much more composure in the second half, holding BC to just three points, a Picco three, in the first four minutes. The Big Green scored just once, a Williams jumper, but forced the Eagles into bad shots on multiple possessions. The Eagles finally broke through with a 7-0 run spurred by five points from Jaclyn Thoman to go up 48-15 at 15:23.
Dosenko popped a three-pointer for the Big Green at 14:01, but Picco answered right back with five points to extend the lead to 53-18 at 14:08. Dosenko's three finally ignited the long-range shooters, as Dartmouth got two more triples from Michelle Meyer (Covington, Ohio) and Margaret Smith to spark a 10-4 run, cutting it to 57-28 at 11:40.
The Big Green continued to chip away and Moses scored seven of Dartmouth points in a three-point span to make it 64-37 after a conventional three-point play at 6:49. Dartmouth continued to battle, but BC did little to slow down its offensive charge, ultimately outscoring the Big Green 20-9 down the stretch. A Brittney Smith layup followed by a Meghan McFee (Manchester, Conn.) threeball made it 70-43 at 3:26. Jasmine Gill poured in seven points late, followed by eight-straight points by Mary Nwachuku to increase the BC advantage for the final 84-46.
Dartmouth has more than a week to regroup before opening its Ivy League title defense against archrival Harvard on Saturday, Jan. 16 at 7 p.m. home at Leede Arena.
