The game was a slugfest between the two squads, with Dartmouth (4-3-1, 0-1 Ivy) holding a 16-14 shot advantage over Princeton (4-3-1, 1-0 Ivy). The teams also combined for 19 fouls in the contest.
Sophomore Sean Donovan (Burr Ridge, Ill.) made four saves in goal for the Big Green but his counterpart, Princeton's Teddy Schneider, made three along with a Tigers' team save to take the shutout.
Princeton did not get on the board until the 35th minute when Josh Walburn scored his first of two goals on the day off a cross from Antoine Hoppenot.
The Tigers took a 1-0 advantage into halftime but extended the lead just a minute into the second half, when Walburn headed one past Donovan off a pass from Hoppenot. The play started with a long throw-in from Mark Linnville to get the 2-0 lead in the 46th minute.
Dartmouth's Lucky Mkosana (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe) fired a shot on goal in the 50th that Schneider turned away. The Big Green kept pushing and nearly got on the board in the 59th minute. Senior Andrew Olsen (Norwell, Mass.) beat Lynch in the box but a Princeton defender sprinted in and flicked the ball out of bounds.
The Tigers made it a 3-0 game in the 71st minute, this time with Walburn getting the assist. He fired one at Donovan who made a big save but Manny Sardinha was there to put the rebound and the game away.
The Big Green returns to the friendly confines of Burnham Field on Saturday, Oct. 9 when it hosts Yale at 7 p.m.
