NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Led by sophomore
James Pleat (Nashua, N.H.) and his two-over 72 on Saturday, the Dartmouth men's golf team sits in a tie for eighth place after the end of the first round at The Macdonald Cup hosted by Yale. The Big Green combined to shoot a 295 (+15) on the day, 15 strokes behind the leader, St. John's, but within four strokes of fourth-place Harvard.
The Red Storm would have an even larger lead than their four-stroke advantage over Sacred Heart if Jeremy Quinn were not simply playing as an individual. Quinn tore up the course in the opening round to the tune of a six-under 64, three strokes ahead of the field. Three other St. John's golfers finished the 18 holes with a 68 (-2), and two others at 76 (+6).
Dartmouth found the back nine to be a bit more difficult than the front as each of its five golfers posted a better score over the initial nine holes. Pleat carded a 35-37—72 (+2) to tie for 20th while the co-captains — senior
Davis Mullany (Great Barrington, Mass.) and junior
Peter Williamson (Hanover, N.H.) — were just one stroke behind, posting a 35-38—73 and a 34-39—73 (+3), respectively, putting them in a tie for 24th.
Rounding out the Big Green group were sophomore
Owen Lynch (Rumford, R.I.) at seven-over par (35-42—77) and classmate
Andrew Jankowski (Elkins, N.H.) at 10-over par (39-41—80).
The tournament will conclude on Sunday.
