HANOVER, N.H. — Freshmen quarterbacks
Cole Marcoux and
Andy Gay combined to throw for 250 yards for the Dartmouth junior varsity squad on Friday afternoon, but Harvard maintained its 10-point halftime lead to defeat the Big Green at Memorial Stadium on Friday afternoon, 17-7, in a warm-up for Dartmouth's homecoming game tomorrow at 1:30 p.m.
Trailing 7-0 in the second quarter, the Big Green tied the game with a 72-yard touchdown drive. On the first play, Marcoux connected with freshman
Clay Robbins for a 50-yard gain down the right sideline to the Crimson 22. Marcoux also completed a 13-yard pass to freshman tight end
Dean Bakes on a 4th-and-9 to keep the drive alive, then pushed forward for the touchdown himself on a one-yard dive.
Matthew Kelly provided the point after to knot the score at seven.
But Harvard capitalized on an interception later in the quarter, needing just five plays to traverse 37 yards, with the go-ahead score coming on an 11-yard pass. The Crimson tacked on a 33-yard field goal as the half expired, which turned out to be the game's final score.
After a plethora of punts in the third quarter, Dartmouth started the fourth quarter with a 59-yard pass from Gay to
Brian Kosnik to advance to the Harvard 10. But on 3rd-and-goal from the nine, the Crimson picked off a pass at the one and returned it 62 yards to thwart the Big Green.
The only other scoring opportunity was a 40-yard field goal attempt by Harvard, which sailed wide to the left.
Marcoux finished the game 15-of-23 for 168 yards, while Gay completed 3-of-8 for 82 yards. Bakes led the team with four receptions for 32 yards, while eight others had at least one catch. On the ground,
Dan Henggeler rushed for 36 yards on 13 carries, while the rest of the Big Green ran 15 times for no yardage.
Harvard wasn't much more successful on the ground, gaining 80 yards on 36 carries, while its quarterbacks were 21-of-32 for 251 yards and an interception, courtesy of sophomore
Corey Vann.
The Dartmouth defense was led by freshman
Hunter Foraker with 12 tackles, including two-and-a-half for a loss, while fellow rookie
Michael Runger made 11 stops.
Ryan Hrabak and
Tyler Green combined to get the Green's lone sack.
The jayvees have one game left this fall, a week from Sunday, Nov. 7, against Bridgton Academy at Memorial Field at noon.
